Drive-Away Dolls is an upcoming comedy caper written by husband and wife duo Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke. It follows Jamie (Margaret Qualley), an uninhibited person going through a breakup with another girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) who needs to learn how to relax and loosen up.
In need of a fresh start, they set out on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, Florida, and things take a turn when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way.
The film also serves as Coen’s first time in the director’s chair. The movie was originally pitched in 2007 under the name Drive-Away Dykeswith the original tagline reading, “Women on the road. All kinds of action.”
Coen mentioned at the time he aimed for an early ’70s tone with a little more sincerity. Prior to Qualley and Viswanathan landing their respective roles, other actresses in the mix back then included Selma Blair, Holly Hunter, Christina Applegate, and Chloë Sevigny.
After production initially fell through, Coen took over as director in 2022 before casting the leads. Shortly after, Beanie Feldstein was cast as Sukie, and in April 2023, Pedro Pascal was cast as Santos, Colman Domingo as Chief, Bill Camp as Curlie, and Matt Damon as Senator Channel for a star-studded mix in this “lesbian road trip project.”
Check out the official poster for the film, and be sure to mark your calendars for its official release on February 23, 2024.
