Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Is a Hilarous Fantasy Epic

The cast of 'Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves'

It's about time a truly great Dungeons & Dragons movie was made!

Are you ready for an adventure?

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is the latest attempt at adapting the ever-popular tabletop role-playing game onto the big screen — and this time, it works wonders.

Our adventuring party begins with Chris Pine, who is perfect as Edgin Darvis, the bard and lead character. Michelle Rodriguez adds her genre-perfect toughness as his best friend, the barbarian Holga. In their party, they are joined by the paladin Xenk Yendar (Regé-Jean Page), sorcerer Simon (Justice Smith), and the druid Doric (Sophia Lillis in a standout role).

The film follows the party as they try to steal a powerful artifact from the delightfully despicable rogue who stole it from them, played with smarm and charm by Hugh Grant.

Dungeons & Dragons works best when it highlights the magical world and creatures of the game and gives us moments between the great ensemble party. Whether that comes from the epic fight scenes involving some classic D&D monsters, solving puzzles, or delving through dungeons, Honor Among Thieves will leave you entertained at every moment.

While there’s a good amount of CGI, the practical effects and monsters that they’ve created are also top-notch and will make anyone who’s played the game shout for joy.

The humor is abundant and works excellently, and this isn’t your typical high fantasy epic! These warriors and wizards bring snark, sassiness, and style to a genre that can sometimes feel too stiff. One cameo, in particular, had me rolling in the aisle.

The film only has a few minor hiccups, including a misguided attempt at unnecessary romance at the end of the film, and a few unfunny fat jokes. But none of those moments drag the film down.

Overall, this is a movie that dedicated nerds and popcorn movie fans will both love equally.

The movie was directed by Jonathan Goldstein and former Freaks and Geeks star John Francis Daley, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Gilio from a story by Chris McKay and Gilio.

In someone else’s hands, the movie probably wouldn’t work nearly as well (and past attempts at Dungeons & Dragons movies have shown this), but Goldstein and Daley are true nerds and fans of the game, making it have the authentic feel audiences will want and will recognize.

Just like the game, the movie leaves you wanting more adventures, whether it's from this same cast or others in this world. It’s about time we got to see the magic of D&D on the big screen!

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. The film hits theaters on Friday, March 31. Check out the trailer below.
