Elliot Page is back on the big screen with a new trans family drama.
The upcoming drama Close to You, out in theaters August 16, is Page's first starring role in a film since he came out as trans. After eagerly waiting for a sneak peek of the project, we finally have the first trailer!
According to the official synopsis, Close to You follows Sam (Page), who "hasn't been home since his transition." After four years in Toronto, he takes a long-dreaded trip back to his hometown for his father's birthday. Once there, he confronts unresolved wounds and reconnects with an old flame.
The trailer starts with Page's character, Sam, talking to a friend. "I'm going home for my dad's birthday. I haven't gone back in close to four years," he says. "Bold, that's a bold move," his friend tells him. "Is it?"
The microaggressions start as soon as Sam sees his family. "I just still think of you as my little girl," his mom tells him. "I don't know all the rules," another person says. "You're going through a thing we all have to obey," he adds.
"What are you talking about, 'rules?' I'm just a person, just talk to me," Sam says.
But it's not all frustration. "You were so sad, and the last thing a parent wants is for their kid to be sad," Sam's dad tells him. "I'm so proud of you, my brave boy, living who you really are," his mom says.
It looks like we're gonna need some tissues for this one!
Page has a "story by" credit along with writer/director Dominic Savage and serves as a producer as well as star in this drama "about love, family, and identity that looks at the challenges of returning home when you have changed and feel like an outsider."
Close to You marks Page's first time on the big screen since he came out as trans in 2020.
Otherwise, Page has starred in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy throughout his transition, and after he came out, the third season of the show was rewritten to include his transition. Now, he's playing a trans character in a movie.
Close to You premieres in theaters on August 16.
