"It's been such a challenging journey to bring this film to life, and it feels like a huge win to finally share it with all of you!" Hayley Kiyoko tells Out about her directorial debut.

Lesbian Jesus is about to direct her first feature film!

Pop singer, actress, director, and novelist Hayley Kiyoko is bringing her hit song and viral music video to life in a new feature film adaptation of Girls Like Girls.

"It's been such a challenging journey to bring this film to life, and it feels like a huge win to finally share it with all of you!" Kiyoko tells Out. "My fans have been asking for this for so long, and honestly, this is the kind of story I desperately needed when I was growing up. I feel so honored to share my journey and bring 'Girls Like Girls' to the big screen."

"As a community, we know how rare it is to see representation that truly reflects our experiences — and even rarer for it to be fully supported in film and TV," she continues. "I can't wait for the world to see this story. I hope it inspires people to believe in queer joy and chase their dreams, no matter how long it takes. Nine years later… we did it!"

Kiyoko's most popular song, "Girls Like Girls" has become a lesbian anthem in the nine years since it was released. Now, it's going to become a film written and directed by Kiyoko for Focus Features (via Deadline).

Kiyoko is teaming up with one of the actresses from the original "Girls Like Girls" music video, Stefanie Scott, to write the screenplay.

Girls Like Girls started as a song released in February 2015 by Kiyoko followed by a self-directed music video in June of that year. In the video, two teen girls, Coley (Stefanie Scott) and Sonya (Kelsey Asbille) are best friends who realize they have feelings for each other despite Sonya dating a boy.

The video quickly went viral, and now has over 150 million views on YouTube. It's also her most listened to song on Spotify with over 140 million streams.

In 2023, Kiyoko adapted the story of the music video into her debut novel of the same name, which debuted at #1 on the New York Times Best Sellers list for Young Adult Hardcover, and remained in the top ten for seven consecutive weeks.
