On Wednesday, A24 dropped the first trailer for the upcoming horror movie I Saw the TV Glow, and it looks creepy, colorful, and wholly original!
I Saw the TV Glow is nonbinary director Jane Schoenbrun's follow-up to their inventive debut film We're All Going to the World's Fair and follows outcast teens Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Owen (Justice Smith), who bond over their love of a Buffy-style show called The Pink Opaque. At first, the show offers them an escape from their stressful lives, but soon the TV universe begins to blur with reality, and Owen is forced to confront this horror when Maddy disappears.
Not only does the film promise the kinds of thrills and chills audiences crave in a horror movie, but queer audiences will also likely relate to the two teens who use a queer-coded TV show as an escape from their tumultuous. Plus, Grammy-winner and queer icon Phoebe Bridgers makes a brief cameo in the trailer as part of the Haley Dahl-fronted band Sloppy Jane, who contributed a song to the soundtrack.
I Saw the TV Glow hits theaters on May 3.
1. The spooky TV show within a movie
A24
A monster-of-the-week TV show inside a horror movie is the kind of turducken we could get on board with! The idea of a TV show slowly starting to bleed into our reality is incredibly unsettling. We usually look to TV as an escape from our real lives — even when we’re watching scary movies — so having it destroy your real life instead of offering a respite is horrifying, and we can’t wait to see the film explore that!
2. The horror of it all
A24
The look of complete and utter terror on Owen’s face is terrifying and makes us VERY curious to see what the movie has in store. We’re always looking for something that will scare us, and this film might do just that.
3. Friends forever
A24
Even though we only get a snapshot of the friendship between Maddy and Owen, you can tell how much they mean to each other. One of the sweetest moments in the trailer is when Maddy says, “I like girls, you know that, right?” before asking Owen if he also likes girls, to which he responds with a laugh, “I think that I like TV shows.”
4. Creepy monsters
A24
We only get a couple of quick glances at the scarier moments from the movie, but what we do see is creepy AF!
5. The psychedelic colors
A24
There is so much visual flair crammed into a two-minute-long trailer. It’s full of vibrant pinks and blues that add a ton of atmosphere and show off Schoenbrun’s singular artistic style.
