An emotional Gascón, who was the first out trans actor to be nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress, spoke at the 82nd Golden Globes after the film she starred in took home the final award of the night for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy.
"I chose these colors tonight, the Buddhist colors, because I have a message for you. The light always wins over darkness," Gascón said, accepting the award after director Jacques Audiard turned the microphone over to his film's star. "I have a lot of things to say to you. You can maybe put us in jail, you can beat us up, but you can never take away our soul, our existence, our identity. And I want to say to you, raise your voice, and freedom, and say 'I am who I am, not who you want.'"

With that speech, Gascón became the first trans person in history to accept the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture.
Emilia Pérez was nominated for a total 10 awards Sunday, and won four of them, including Best Motion Picture (Non-English Language) and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña. Gascón was also nominated for Best Actress, losing that category to Demi Moore.
Emilia Pérez is streaming on Netflix. The 82nd Golden Globe Awards ceremony was broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+.
