The biggest controversy of this year's Oscar race has a big new update.
Karla Sofía Gascón became the first out trans actor to be nominated for an Oscar for playing the title role of a Mexican trans cartel leader in the musical film Emilia Pérez. However, Gascón was then uninvited to attend promotional events tied to awards season after racist, Islamophobic, and xenophobic X posts (formerly tweets) resurfaced.

Gascón is now making a comeback at the Academy Award ceremony. And Netflix, the studio behind the movie, is said to be fronting the bill after all. Sources confirmed to Variety that the controversial actress is planning on attending the Oscars on Sunday, March 2, and that Netflix will pay for the expenses required for her to attend.
It is not yet known if she will walk the red carpet, do interviews, or sit near other nominees from the film like co-star Zoe Saldaña and director Jacques Audiard. Furthermore, Gascón plans to attend the César Awards in Paris on February 28.
Gascón's awards season troubles started when previous social media posts she made came to light.
After the controversial social media posts came to the surface, Gascón issued statements attempting to apologize for the remarks — which included hateful attacks on Muslims, people of color winning Academy Awards, and even George Floyd. However, she also defended herself, saying she is not racist or hateful, and was the victim of a media smear campaign.
After the film's director Jacques Audiard told Deadline that he had no interest in talking to the actress, Gascón made another public statement saying she would be stepping away from the rest of awards season out of respect for the film and the people who worked on it.
Previous reports had stated that Netflix completely cut ties with her (via The Hollywood Reporter) and refused to pay for her travel and accommodations to awards season events. This led Gascón to skip the Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and SAG Awards, all ceremonies that she had been nominated for.
The 97th Academy Awards will air March 2 on ABC.
