Get ready to fall in love with Lily Gladstone in an entirely different role!
The Oscar-nominated actress, who became a veritable Hollywood star after leading Killers of the Flower Moon last year, has a new, queer role that we couldn’t be more excited for!
Gladstone stars in
Fancy Dance, a crime thriller and family drama about two women on the Seneca-Cayuga Reservation in Oklahoma who go searching for their missing relative. Gladstone plays Jax, a queer woman taking care of her niece Roki (Eisabel Deroy-Olson) and helping her get ready for an upcoming powwow. When Jax’s sister, and Roki’s mom, goes missing, the two women set out to find her.
The film comes from queer indigenous filmmaker Erica Tremblay, who also co-wrote it. She told Outfest that she was excited to work with Gladstone on the project, and wanted to work with her from the moment she first saw her face.
“I can go back to the moment I saw Lilly’s face and discovered her existence on the planet. I’m a huge Kelly Reichardt fan, and when I watched Certain Women, her face came across the screen and I was like ‘is this person native and is this person queer?’” she said. “There was just so much about them that shone through. Lily’s face can tell a magnitude of emotions with just one glance. And I remember being like ‘I have to work with this person. I have to find a way to this human.’”
“Our film Fancy Dance has found the perfect home with Apple, and I am thrilled to share this beautiful story of two Seneca-Cayuga women with a global audience,” Tremblay said. “As a Native American filmmaker, seeing my community included in the rich tapestry of cinema is a dream come true.”
Many thought that Gladstone was set to win her first Academy Award earlier this year for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon, but she lost to Emma Stone for Poor Things. Fancy Dance is a critically-acclaimed movie that premiered at Sundance and features Gladstone in a complicated queer role, so maybe this will be her shot at Oscars redemption.
Fancy Dance also stars Ryan Begay, Shea Whigham, Crystle Lightning, and Audrey Wasilewski, and will be playing in select theaters on June 21 and streaming on Apple TV+ on June 28.
