9 LGBTQ+ movies we can't wait to watch this fall

Amazon MGM Studios; Universal Pictures; Warner Bros.
It has already been an incredible year for queer films, with movies like Love Lies Bleeding, I Saw the TV Glow, Challengers, Problemista, The People's Joker, Fancy Dance, and more making all of us run to theaters, and even though we only have a few months left of 2024, things are only going to get better!
With award season approaching, more prestige movies are going to be coming out, and with the holidays, more family-friendly movies will be coming out as well, meaning we're going to get multiple kinds of queer movies this autumn.
Here are the ones we're most excited about!
Will & Harper - September 13
This documentary following comedian Will Ferrell and his longtime best friend (and former Saturday Night Live head writer) Harper Steele as they go on a cross-country road trip after she came out as trans, is one of the best, and most important of the year. It's an honest and hilarious look at friendship, learning, and what it's like to be trans in America today. It debuts in theaters September 13 in select theaters and on Netflix on September 27.
My Old Ass - September 13
My Old Ass stars Maisy Stella as 18-year-old lesbian Elliott who takes mushrooms and meets her 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza) while tripping. Her older self gives her advice, including spending more time with her family and specifically, staying away from a boy named Chad. What follows is a heartfelt and funny coming-of-age story mixed together with a clumsy (and vaguely lesbophobic) exploration of bisexuality.
Uglies - September 13
Laverne Cox stars alongside other hot actors like Joey King, Keith Powers, and Brianne Tju in this adaptation of a YA novel about a society where everyone gets plastic surgery to become "beautiful" when they turn 16.
In the Summers - September 20
This film, which premiered at Sundance, has a logline that reads, "On a journey that spans across the formative years of their lives, two sisters navigate their loving but volatile father during their yearly summer visits to his home in Las Cruces, New Mexico."
Joker: Folie à Deux - October 4
Lady Gaga joins Joaquin Phoenix as Harley Quinn in this new sequel from Todd Phillips. While this movie picks up shortly after the first Joker, this one is different in that it is a musical and a love story. Will it match the success of the first Joker? We'll have to wait and see!
Emilia Perez - November 13
This beautifully bizarre musical in Spanish and English is about a Mexian cartel leader who transitions to live her true life. It features powerhouse performances from Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Zoe Saldana, and Karla Sofia Gascon, the trans woman who stars as the title character. This movie is unlike any you've seen before and definitely deserves Oscars.
Wicked - November 22
The two-part theatrical epic begins on November 22 when Wickedcomes out in theaters! This legendary musical about Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good Witch is finally being made into a movie by Jon M. Chu and starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande among a talented cast. We can't wait for this one!
Moana 2 - November 27
Out actress Auli'i Cravalho is returning to voice Moana in this animated sequel from Disney.
Nightbitch - December 6
Nightbitch, directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), stars Amy Adams as a stay-at-home mom who's domestic life starts to go off the rails when she thinks she is turning into a dog. The movie looks absolutely unhinged, so we can't wait to watch!
