Nicholas Galitzine has officially been cast to play the iconic, big-muscled barbarian warrior He-Man in Amazon's upcoming, live-action Masters of the Universe film!
The actor is known best for his roles inRed, White & Royal Blue, Mary & George, and most recently, The Idea of You.
The announcement came today after years of back and forth. The film was originally set to premiere on Netflix, but last year the streamer pulled the plug on the film all together. But have no fear, as Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel swooped in and are now moving full force ahead.
Masters of the Universe is rumored to follow He-Man as he crashes on to planet earth as a child. He grows up and heads back to his home planet to defend it from the iconic villain Skeletor. Not only is He-Man a pure hunk, he also happens to be a gay icon in his own ways. Galitzine has played numerous gay roles, even stealing our hearts as gay royalty in Red, White & Royal Blue. It wouldn't be a complete stretch for the upcoming rendition of the character to lean into the queerness, and if anything we hope to see a push for it!
He-Man, for a long time, represented escapism and empowerment. Although his sexuality was never directly addressed, there were subtle hints. In the He-Man series, the hero had a campiness to him, very close relationships with the other male characters, and there were no female romantic interests for him. We wouldn't dare forget his fresh cut blonde bob and skimpy little outfit, since only He-Man saves planets in a steel harness.
We can't wait to see Galitzine on our screens again (especially in a bob & a crop top) and hopefully more cast announcements will be made soon! It is going to be interesting to see who will play opposite Galitzine as Skeletor. All we know for sure is that we will be SAT.
Masters of the Universe is set to premiere on June 5, 2026
