The first trailer for Our Son is finally here!

Written and directed by Bill Oliver along with co-writer Peter Nickowitz, Our Son tells the story of Gabriel (Billy Porter) and Nicky (Luke Evans), a gay couple raising their child together. However, things are far from perfect in this marriage, and divorce is looming.

“I really hate it when you argue with me in front of our friends,” Gabriel says in the trailer.

Nicky follows up, “Is that what this is about?”

“No,” Gabriel replies. “I don’t feel like we’re partners in this, and haven’t for a long time.”

The rest of the trailer showcases the specific intricacies of a gay couple who have a child together and are navigating a divorce. In one scene, Nicky yells out that he’s the biological parent of their child, but is told that the law sees both he and Gabriel as legal parents. In another scene, Gabriel accuses Nicky of not even having an actual bond with their kid.

Other court scenes suggest that a custody battle between the two characters will ensue as they seemingly fight for primary custody of their child. Their son, Owen, is played by young actor Christopher Woodley. The rest of the cast includes actors Andrew Rannells, Isaac Cole Powell, Robin Weigert, Kate Burton, Phylicia Rashad, Francis Jue, and Emily Donahoe, to name a few.

After conquering the right to same-sex marriage, LGBTQ+ couples established the precedent for same-sex divorce, too. With so many queer rom-coms coming out in the last few years about gay people falling in love, Our Son is definitely poised to stand out as a story about an existing couple going through gay divorce.

We love seeing the good, the bad, and the ugly in mainstream media, and Our Son certainly adds layer of representation that we can appreciate!

Our Son premieres on December 8 in select theaters and on December 15 on VOD.
