Regina King is back in the spotlight with her new Netflix film Shirley. The story follows the life of Shirley Chisholm and her campaign to almost become the first Black president, breaking boundaries in 1972 and much more.
Out spoke to the cast about the film and asked King if she saw any parallels between the microaggressions Chisholm faced while in congress and her experiences in Hollywood, to which King explains
“I would say no due to the political space being much more cutthroat and in Hollywood, we can utilize the getting bees with honey approach of communication more than in politics,” she said.
Terrence Howard, who plays Arthur Hardwick Jr. (Chisholm's second husband) also told Out how he makes sure to provide space and opportunity for Black women in Hollywood and how he champions them in similar fashion like his character.
“You have to have a sense of understanding and intelligence,” he said.
“The woman is always 5-10x smarter than the man because there’s more communication taking place within her hemispheres. As a man who is intelligent and recognizes this, you respect this and lift them up because you can’t live without them due to them being stronger to understand the perimeters around them. You’re an unbalanced man if you don’t recognize that you need the insight of what a woman brings.”
