Scream 7 Is Happening—And the Director Will Be Gay

The franchise is returning to its gay roots!

What’s your favorite scary movie by a gay director? If your answer was Happy Death Day or Freaky by Christopher Landon, have we got some great news for you!

Landon, who directed those terrific horror comedies is now moving on to one of the biggest horror franchises in the world: Scream!

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gilllett, also known as filmmaking duo Radio Silence, had directed the previous two films, Scream and Scream 6, and revitalized the franchise after a several-year absence of films. They introduced a new “Core Four” of characters played by actors Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding.

In 2022’s Scream, the character Mindy Meeks-Martin was introduced. Played by out actor Jasmin Savoy Brown, the character is the niece of original Scream character Randy Meeks and is the first confirmed gay character in the franchise.

Now, Landon, who is gay, is taking over the reins. While Landon usually also writes the projects he directs, it is not known if he will write the upcoming Scream sequel. The last two films were written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.

With a gay director, the franchise is returning to its roots in a way. The original four Scream movies, directed by Wes Craven, were written by gay screenwriter Kevin Williamson.
