Pop icon Selena Gomez's foray into acting is ushering in a new era!
The "Calm Down" singer stars in Netflix's upcoming musical drama film Emilia Pérez alongside Out100 honoree Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña, and Out's Raffy Ermac caught up with the starlet at the premiere's red carpet in Los Angeles on Monday night.
"I think I dreamed of being in a project like this," Gomez says of the film. "I've always loved acting and I feel like I've barely started. It's given me an opportunity to reinvent myself."
Emilia Pérez is receiving Oscar buzz before its wide release, especially surrounding the Spanish star of the film, Karla Sofía Gascón. Earlier this year, she won the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival, making history as the first trans actor to win a major prize at the festival.
Gomez is surprised by the reaction. "I definitely don't think any of us were thinking of that while we were making this film," she explains. "If anything, I thought it would be a bit of a niche film and a few people would see it. It's a bit surprising and I'm really grateful that I'm a part of something that hopefully is leaving some sort of impact on people."
And in the name of musicals, Out asked Gomez to name her favorite musical of all time, and she had something to say about fellow pop icon Ariana Grande's upcoming Wicked foray. "I don't know if I have one of all time, I'm just excited to see Ariana's movie."
Aren't we all!
Emilia Pérez will have a limited theatrical release in the US on November 1 and premieres November 13 on Netflix.
