Fans of the DC Extended Universe are already excited about the upcoming release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The sequel follows the heels of the 2019 first installment when the World’s Mightiest Mortal brought something fresh and fun to the darkness the DCEU had explored in previous films.
Now, since James Gunn has stepped up as DC Studios’ creative director, some things are going to change — like the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters.
In an interview for the upcoming film, Fury of the Gods writers Chris Morgan and Henry Gayden sat down with Dorkaholics to discuss what fans can expect from the upcoming sequel.
“The only new addition for this movie is being a lot more forthright about Pedro being gay,” said Gayden. “And that was hinted at in the first movie very subtly. And I thought it was really important and really, really fought for us including that and bringing that into the fore in this movie.”
The character of Pedro is the foster brother to Billy Batson/Shazam. He was first introduced in the Flashpoint miniseries and can share Billy’s power by saying “Shazam!” and transforming into an older, stronger, superpowered version of himself (played by actor Dj Cotrona). The comics themselves never address Pedro’s sexuality, but it was hinted at in the first film.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the first of four films DC Studios and Warner Discovery will bring to theaters in 2023 under the direction of Gunn, with The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom also on the roster for the year. Fury of the Gods hits theaters Friday, March 17.
