25 iconic 'Star Wars' characters that the gays will always love
May the gays be with you!
(L-R) Oscar Isaac; Rosario Dawson; Manny Jacinto in the 'Star Wars' franchise.Lucasfilm/Walt Disney Studios/Disney+Star Wars fans are unfortunately very familiar with how painfully straight this galaxy far, far away can be. While a few queer characters are slowly being introduced to the franchise with projects such as Andor, the Doctor Aphra comic book series, and certain animated shows, these few LGBTQ+ characters don't typically get too much screentime.
Nonetheless, the overall Star Wars saga still has a long and proud history of fans in the LGBTQ+ community latching onto certain characters and stanning them for years to come. As the waiting and the hoping for more queer representation in the franchise continues, it's worth celebrating a group of characters who have made the girls, gays, and theys fall in love with this epic space universe created by George Lucas.
Scroll through to explore our favorite characters in the Star Wars franchise — and keep up with the movies, TV shows, and related content streaming on Disney+.
Luke Skywalker
Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in 'Star Wars: A New Hope.'
Lucasfilm/Twentieth Century-Fox
Luke Skywalker — first played by Mark Hamill in the 1977 film Star Wars: A New Hope —is the original space twink himself. With his stylish poncho and floppy hair, Luke is definitely feeling the rush in this galaxy far, far away.
C-3PO
Anthony Daniels as C-3PO in 'Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.'
Lucasfilm/20th Century Fox
There are very few people, as well as Star Wars icons, who can be as sassy as C-3PO (originally voiced by Anthony Daniels in films). When this droid says that he's "fluent in over six million forms of communication," throwing shade and being sassy is absolutely one of them.
Padmé Amidala
Natalie Portman as Padmé Amidala in 'Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.'
Lucasfilm/20th Century Fox
Padmé Amidala is mother! Whether she's in full Royal House of Naboo drag or just working that crop top in the Geonosis execution arena/colosseum, this diva is never not turning looks and giving us everything we need. Oh, and she's brought to life by none other than Natalie Portman! A true icon.
Jar Jar Binks
Jar Jar Binks in 'Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.'
Lucasfilm/20th Century Fox
What does that tongue do, Jar Jar Binks?! Gungan… more like Gungayn! Robbed, snubbed, queer legend in the Star Wars franchise.
Ahsoka
Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka on 'Star Wars: Ahsoka.'
Lucasfilm/Disney+
The gays love a certified baddie, and no one in the entire Star Wars universe can beat Ahsoka in that category. This dual-wielding force user is one of one, the number one, the only one.
Fans have been in love with Ahsoka for many years as one of the main characters in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series — and Rosario Dawson bringing her to life on the Disney+ show Ahsoka gave us even more reasons to stan this woman.
Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader
Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker in 'Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith'; David Prowse as Darth Vader in 'Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.'
Lucasfilm/20th Century Fox
The often problematic — but sometimes also fun — dynamics between Jedi master and apprentice has been riling up gay fan-fiction writers for decades. The deep bond and passionate anger between Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is one of the spiciest pairings a queer geek can find… and when corruption and redemption are also involved, things get as hot as the lava of Mustafar.
Oh, and you better not forget that Darth Vader was in favor of repealing "don't ask, don't tell" back in 2010. A true trailblazer and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights!
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi in 'Star Wars: Attack of the Clones.'
Lucasfilm/20th Century Fox
Star Wars fans have been crushing on Obi-Wan for decades, and their hearts broke when this Jedi icon lost his master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) in The Phantom Menace.
During his 2022 limited series on Disney+, things were also left quite open-ended when it came to Obi-Wan being potentially bisexual. Obi, call us if you're with it!
Ziro the Hutt
Ziro Desilijic Tiure aka Ziro the Hutt on 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars.'
Cartoon Network/Disney+
Ziro Desilijic Tiure, otherwise known as Ziro the Hutt, is basically Truman Capote as an alien, and we love him for it!
The Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series has told viewers that Ziro is straight… but we know the real tea. We all do.
Finn (f.k.a. FN-2187)
John Boyega as Finn in 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.'
Lucasfilm/Walt Disney Studios
We could've had it all!
The early days of the sequel Star Wars trilogy had some fans literally holding out hope that Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) would end up together. Unfortunately, subsequent films turned the dynamics between them into a really boring "bromance."
Poe Dameron
Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron in 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.'
Lucasfilm/Walt Disney Studios
From lamenting in the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he had to "squeeze [his] ass into the Millennium Falcon chair" because the ship wasn't "[made] for ethnic hips" to going on record to support the fans who were shipping Poe Dameron and Finn as a couple, Oscar Isaac just gets it, and gay Star Wars fans are always ready to stan.
Vice-Admiral Amilyn Holdo
Laura Dern as Vice-Admiral Amilyn Holdo in 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi.'
Lucasfilm/Walt Disney Studios
Vice-Admiral Amilyn Holdo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi? That's Laura Dern in space! Plus, she has purple hair and is a total mommy. 10/10, no notes.
Lando Calrissian
Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian in 'Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.'
Lucasfilm/20th Century Fox
Lando Calrissian, originally played by Billy Dee Williams, is canonically pansexual on Star Wars. That man loves humans and aliens of all genders, as well as robots. Rise up, Landosexuals!
The Armorer
Emily Swallow as The Armorer on 'The Mandalorian.'
Lucasfilm/Disney+
Disney+'s The Mandalorian introduced fans to a live-action The Armorer — a character that is basically on a stone butch version of a Mandalorian.
Klaud (a.k.a. Live Slug Reaction)
Klaud in 'Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker.'
Lucasfilm/Walt Disney Studios
The world fell in love with Klaud from his "live slug reaction" memes. And then Klaud was revealed to be queer in one of the Star Wars video games (via Gizmodo), turning him into an icon for the rest of time.
Omega
Omega on 'Star Wars: The Bad Batch.'
Lucasfilm/Disney+
Just like Boba Fett, Omega is an unaltered clone of Jango Fett. Thus, it would make sense for her to be a boy. Except that she's not a boy.
Omega is our favorite unofficial trans girl in the Star Wars saga, and that's that.
Din Djarin (a.k.a. The Mandalorian)
Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin on 'The Mandalorian.'
Lucasfilm/Disney+
Did someone say "daddy"?
Din Djarin, the man under the suit on The Mandalorian (played by Pedro Pascal), is a great father figure… and we'd love to call him daddy.
Shin Hati and Sabine Wren
Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati and Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren on 'Star Wars: Ahsoka.'
Lucasfilm/Disney+
Lots of Star Wars fans picked up on the vibes and insane chemistry between Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) every time they faced off on Ahsoka. If you've ever wondered why so many people love a good enemies-to-lovers trope, just press play on Shin and Sabine in action. All questions will be immediately answered.
Mon Mothma
Genevieve O'Reilly as Mon Mothma on 'Star Wars: Andor.'
Lucasfilm/Disney+
Mon Mothma?? More like Mommy Mothma!! Played by Genevieve O'Reilly, this Andor character poised, elegant, and always serving.
Sarlacc
Sarlacc in 'Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.'
Lucasfilm/20th Century Fox
Sarlacc is showing hole on main during her stint in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. And she's proud of it.
Cinta Kaz and Vel Sartha
Varada Sethu as Cinta Kaz and Faye Marsay as Vel Sartha on 'Star Wars: Andor.'
Lucasfilm/Disney+
These lesbians are not only a vital part of the early rebellion against the Galactic Empire — as shown on Disney+'s Andor — but they're also the first actual same-sex couple in a live-action movie or TV show within the Star Wars franchise.
All the praise in the world for Cinta Kaz (played by Varada Sethu) and Vel Sartha (played by Faye Marsay).
Zam Wesell
Leeanna Walsman as Zam Wesell in 'Star Wars: Attack of the Clones.'
Lucasfilm/20th Century Fox
Leeanna Walsman's performance as Zam Wesell in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones introduced fans to a highly-skilled and badass person with shapeshifting abilities — which is often a fabulous fantasy for trans people to explore.
The Stranger
Manny Jacinto as The Stranger on 'Star Wars: The Acolyte.'
Lucasfilm/Disney+
The very wise "stranger danger" advice doesn't apply to Manny Jacinto's role as The Stranger on The Acolyte.
The Stranger is hands down the hottest character of all time to appear in any Star Wars project. Maybe it's time to stop being strangers, then, and just get to know him better!
Elia Kane
Katy O'Brian as Elia Kane on 'The Mandalorian.'
Lucasfilm/Disney+
Even though Elia Kane is deeply loyal to the Galactic Empire, we were done for on the exact moment that this officer played by Katy O'Brian appeared for the first time on The Mandalorian.
