Are these cowboys showing their lassos?
Pedro Pascal (Silva) and Ethan Hawke (Jake) play lovers in Pedro Almodóvar’s Strange Way of Life. The gay Western, which is set for an October 6 release, had an advance screening over the weekend at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
As shared by the Washington Post’s Jada Yuan, Almodóvar introduced the TIFF screening of Strange Way of Life with the following remarks:
“There are a lot of scenes with Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke. I am sorry to say that they are not naked… You are not going to see them naked, but you are going to see two wonderful [performances].”
Pascal and Hawke do have intimate scenes in Strange Way of Life where they get topless, tussle in bed, and kiss each other. There’s also a scene that shows Pascal’s ass. Alas, if you were hoping for full-frontal moments, the film doesn’t include any of those.
Strange Way of Life is a campier and more unserious film than Brokeback Mountain. Overall, Almodóvar crafted a fun and sensual movie filled with beautiful actors living their full gay Western fantasy.
Besides Pascal and Hawke, early reactions to Strange Way of Life have been praising the chemistry between José Condessa (who plays a young Silva) and Jason Fernández (who plays a young Jake). Élite heartthrob Manu Ríos is also featured in the film playing a singer.

Despite the lack of pole on main, Strange Way of Life is still a thrilling ride worth watching!
