It's not about aptitude, it's the way you're viewed, so it's very shrewd to be… very, very popular, like Wicked! It's official: the Jon M. Chu-directed film starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda (F.K.A. Galinda) has just broken a couple of historic, all-time box office records.
After smashing several box office sales records in its opening weekend, the wickedly unstoppable film continues to make history over time. New updates on the Wicked box office sales show that the movie isn't just entering all-time rankings, but is now even conquering the no. 1 spot in certain categories.

On Saturday, November 30, Deadline's Anthony D'Alessandro reported that Wicked: Part One is now the highest-grossing movie of all time based on a Broadway musical.
The report notes that Wicked made $214.3 million at the domestic box office as of Friday, November 29 — beating the previous chart-topper, 1978's Grease, which has a lifetime gross of $190 million at the domestic box office.

Even when considering all films based on a play, Wicked is now also at the top of the charts.
Data from Box Office Mojo shows that Wicked is now the no. 1 highest-grossing movie in the "Play Adaptation" category. It has surpassed A Few Good Men (based on the 1989 play by Aaron Sorkin), which is now a runner-up with a domestic box office gross of $141 million since its premiere in 1992.

Earning $214 million in domestic box office sales means that Wicked currently stands as the 7th highest-grossing movie released this year (via Box Office Mojo).
As of this writing, the ranking of highest-grossing films released in 2024 based on domestic box office sales stands as follows:
1. Inside Out 2 — $652 million
2. Deadpool & Wolverine — $636 million
3. Despicable Me 4 — $361 million
4. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice — $294 million
5. Dune: Part Two — $282 million
6. Twisters — $267 million
7. Wicked — $214 million
8. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire — $196 million
9. Kung Fu Panda 4 — $193.59 million
10. Bad Boys: Ride or Die — $193.57 million
(Data as of Saturday, November 30, 2024)
Another Deadline report forecasts that Wicked is expected to gross $262 million by Sunday, December 1. If that happens, Wicked will get very close to the Twisters box office gross, and will be trending to potentially beat Dune: Part Two and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice before the year ends.

In comparison to the list of highest-grossing 2024 movies domestically, Wicked isn't as close to the 14 projects currently ranking higher in worldwide box office sales. But one could argue that the musical film is only in its second week in theaters and has plenty of time to climb the global box office charts of 2024.
Wicked: Part One is in theaters.
