Timothée Chalamet is bringing us into his world of imagination in the first trailer for Wonka, which will explore the famous chocolatier’s backstory.
The film stars Call Me by Your Name and Dune’s Chalamet as the quirky chocolate maker before he set up shop in his famous Oompa Loompa-run factory. It's a musical prequel to 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory , which starred Gene Wilder in the lead role and was inspired by the beloved Roald Dahl book.
In the trailer, Chalamet dons the famous top hat and purple velvet coat as he takes over a small town and tries to open his very own factory where he can share his love of chocolate with the world.

Director Paul King (who also co-wrote the script alongside Simon Farnaby) said that he didn’t want to start from scratch when writing the eccentric chocolate maker. "I didn't want to reinvent those things 'cause it felt like that '71 movie had come up with these incredibly enduring, iconic looks," he explained in an interview with Entertainmenmt Weekly. "What I wanted this movie to be was like a companion piece to that movie. If you imagine those people in that world 25 years earlier, that was my starting process. Eventually, he would grow into that person and that factory."
The trailer shows Wonka befriending a little orphan girl who accompanies him on his quest to open his factory. We also get to see Wonka’s hilarious introduction to Oompa Loompas. The little orange man is played by none other than Hugh Grant — who even does a silly little dance by way of introduction!
The film also stars Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman, Jim Carter, Keegan-Michael Key, Tom Davis, Sally Hawkins, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, and Matt Lucas.
Watch the trailer below and prepare to dive into a world of pure imagination when the film hits theaters on December 15!
