The Kenny Ortega legacy lives on!

Once a theater kid, always a theater kid.

Zac Efron is garnering critical praise for his starring role in the wrestling drama The Iron Claw, and moviegoers are pointing to one scene in particular where he gets to really show off his skills.

In the film, which chronicles the ups and many downs of the legendary Von Erich wrestling family, Efron plays Kevin Von Erich.

One of the happiest scenes in the movie takes place at Kevin’s wedding to Pam (Lily James). With Kevin in a white tuxedo, Pam in a big, classically ’80s wedding dress, and the other Von Erich brothers in gray tuxes, a joyful line dance breaks out as John Denver’s “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” plays.

In the scene, all the brothers and the bride look like they are having the times of their lives, but Efron really stands out. With his hands firmly on his belt buckle, he shuffles, scoots, and kicks like he’s been doing it since the day he was born.

And there’s a good reason Efron outshines his co-stars in the scene: he spent the early years of his career working under the iconic choreographer and director Kenny Ortega on the three High School Musical movies.

From 2006-2008, Efron had his breakout role as Troy Bolton, a basketball player-turned-drama-kid who performs many highly-choreographed dance numbers in each film. All that dance training has seemed to stick with him, as he effortlessly slides across the dancefloor in The Iron Claw.

Efron has even stated that his dance background helped him do the wrestling in the film.

“Dancing and wrestling are surprisingly similar,” he told W Magazine. “There's a choreographed element to both, and the more you do it, the better you get. Also, just the sense of moving with a partner: Sometimes you lead, and sometimes you're holding on to the other guy. The learning curve for wrestling is you just go for it. For stuff like climbing up on the ropes and jumping off, you’ve just got to nut up and go for it. There's no real practicing.”

The Iron Claw is currently playing in theaters.
