Luca Guadagnino's 'Challengers' Pushed Back to 2024 Amid Actors Strike

Luca Guadagnino's 'Challengers' Pushed Back to 2024 Amid Actors Strike

The movie was supposed to premiere at this year's Venice Film Festival.

We’ve said we can’t wait to see Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming sexy sports drama Challengers, but unfortunately, it looks like we'll have no choice but to wait.

The film, which stars Emmy-winning actress Zendaya as the center of a love triangle between two tennis rivals and former best friends played Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor, was supposed to premiere at the upcoming Venice Film Festival and then have a theatrical release on September 15 of this year.

But now, due to the currently ongoing SAG strike, that premiere is being delayed. As none of the actors, especially Zendaya, would be promoting the film, MGM has decided to push it to 2024.

Now, there is no planned world premiere, and the movie will be released in theaters on April 26. At Venice, Edoardo De Angelis’ Comandante will take Challengers’ spot.

In Challengers, Zendaya plays a former tennis prodigy named Tashi Duncan. After she suffers a career-ending injury, she becomes a coach for her husband (Mike Faist). When he’s on a losing streak, she suggests he enters a "challenger" tournament, where he faces Patrick (Josh O’Connor), his former best friend and Tashi’s ex. “As their past and present collide, Tashi is forced to ask herself what she is willing to do to win.”

After Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name, Suspiria, and Bones and All, we’re beyond excited about this sexy film. Hopefully, the studios will give actors and writers a fair deal so we can see the movie sooner rather than later.
