It’s 2024 and we’re still stuck in homophobic and transphobic discourse within the world of sports and showbiz.
On Wednesday, Jan. 17, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) star Sean Strickland launched into a new vicious rant on LGBTQ+ people while speaking at a press conference in Toronto, Canada. Specifically, Strickland was asked about his past homophobic remarks, such as writing on Twitter (now X) in Jan. 2022: “If I had a gay son I would think I failed as a man to create such weakness.”
In response to the question, Strickland started to attack MMA Fighting reporter Alexander Lee, who is Canadian, while addressing the homophobic remarks he was asked about.
“You’re a weak f*cking man, dude,” Strickland said (via The Daily Beast). “You’re part of the f*cking problem. You elected Justin Trudeau when he seized the bank accounts. You’re just f*cking pathetic. And the fact that you have no f*cking backbone as he shut down your f*cking country and seized bank accounts, you asked me some stupid sh*t like that?! Go f*ck yourself! Move the f*ck on, man. F*cking coward!”
We’d love to move the f*ck on, as suggested by Strickland, if only we could exist in a world where LGBTQ+ people aren’t constantly targeted and attacked by people like him.
When questioned about transphobic statements he’s made in the past, Strickland launched into yet another wild rant.
“Here’s the thing about Bud Light. 10 years ago, to be trans was a mental fucking illness,” the fighter said. “And now, all of a sudden, people like you have fucking weaseled your way in the world. You are an infection. You are the definition of weakness. Everything that is wrong with the world is because of fucking you.”
He continued:
“And the best thing is the world’s not buying it. The world’s not buying your f*cking bullsh*t you’re fucking peddling. The world is not saying, ‘You know what? You’re right. F*cking chicks have d*cks.’ The world’s not saying that. The world’s saying, ‘No, there are two genders. I don’t want my kids being taught about who they could f*ck in school. I don’t want my kids being taught about their sexual preference.’”
It’s really sad to see it. But here we are.
