After over a week of Wicked fans taking the lyrics of "Defying Gravity" and really holding space and feeling power with that, star of the blockbuster film Ariana Grande has responded to the now iconic meme.
In case you missed it, Out reporter Tracy E. Gilchrist interviewed Grande alongside Cynthia Erivo at the Wicked press junket and asked the magical duo about the queer people "really taking the lyrics of 'Defying Gravity' and really holding space with that and feeling power in that."
Grande held onto Erivo's perfectly manicured finger as she responded, "I didn't know that was happening."
"I've seen it, yeah," replied Gilchrest.
"That's really powerful, "said Erivo. "That's what I wanted."
On Sunday, December 1, Gilchrest recreated the finger grab moment on Instagram and, according to Pop Crave, got a response from Glinda herself!
"oh my goodness ! our queen !!!!" Grande wrote with a heart emoji. "holding space with you always."
The meme has become a certified part of not just the Wicked press run, but of the culture. It's on t-shirts, the Gay Men's Chorus turned it into a song, and it's been referenced by everyone from Keke Palmer to the Met Museum.
Talk about iconic!
