We believe in Galinda and Elphaba!
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo gave us a live preview of what we can expect from duets between the two women when Wicked comes out later this year when they performed "When You Believe" (from the film The Prince of Egypt) at the 2024 Met Gala.
After stars walked the carpet, they were treated to a performance by Grande inside The Met. She started off the set singing "Once Upon a Dream" from the 1959 Disney film Sleeping Beauty (on theme with the exhibit), and continued singing several of her own songs. The set included "Into You," "The Boy is Mine," "We Can't Be Friends,' and "Yes, And?"
But it was her closing number that really turned heads! For the finale, Grande's Wicked co-star Erivo joined her on stage, and the two did their first live duet performance together, singing "When You Believe."
The two will later be seen starring as Elphaba (Erivo) and Galinda (Grande) in
Wicked: Part One, coming out this November 27.
For the performance, Grande wore a green tulle dress from Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano. When Erivo joined her onstage, she wore a rose houndstooth dress from Thom Borwne, meaning that the two switched colors for their movie characters (Galinda is always wearing pink, while Elphaba's skin is green).
The duo, who each walked the red carpet at fashion's biggest night earlier in the evening, absolutely slayed the duet, made famous by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, who's version won the Academy Award for Best Song and was nominated for two Grammys.
"When You Believe" is even more of a preview for Wicked, as the song was written by Stephen Schwartz, who also wrote the songs for Wicked.
If we weren't already hyped for the film, you can bet your ass we are now!
