Damez drops album Never Satisfied, talks dating on Hella Single podcast

"DM me," says the former Out cover star on Out's new podcast Hella Single, which dives into the dating lives of queer creatives.

Hella Single is a comedic podcast from Outthat uncovers the dating lives of queer creatives and influencers. Hosted by Lamont Baldwin, the show plunges deep into personal dating stories and funny questions to uncover the real reasons behind their single status. Listen above.

Damez is celebrating singlehood and Valentine’s Day with a surprise album release. The Atlanta-based indie artist and Out magazine June 2020 cover star has returned with his latest full-length studio effort, Never Satisfied. This marks Damez's first complete R&B album, where he delves into themes of love and intimate relationships. It’s only fitting to kick off Out's new Hella Single podcast with the cover boy turned lover boy himself.

Damez is currently single. But the songs on Never Satisfied reveal the heart and soul of a true romantic. Damez’s lyrics express a profound understanding of himself and his desires: to be loved wholly. The 11-track LP departs from his signature trap sound, offering a more melodic, love-centric experience.

On Hella Single, Damez opens up about the qualities he finds attractive in a partner. “I like ambition. I like confidence. I like somebody that can make me laugh. I love to laugh. I feel like I’m a very passionate and serious person most of the time, but if you know me, you know my funny side.”

When it comes to meeting Mr. Right, Damez maintains realistic expectations about how and where that might happen. “I’m not expecting to walk [through] the store, holding some books and bump into a guy and he’s like, ‘Oh, let me get those for you.’ That’s not happening, so yeah DM me.”

Damez’s past relationships have not been without their challenges. When asked what qualities his exes shared, he jokingly replied, “toxic.” He goes deeper into these past relationships in his new project, particularly on the standout track “Too Much.” This pop-country bop showcases a uniquely vulnerable side of the artist. While previous work highlighted extreme confidence and a somewhat nonchalant attitude toward dating and men, this record presents quite the opposite — almost a plea for acceptance from an uncertain love interest. Damez consciously reflects on how he is perceived by the world, often feeling that his popularity and artistic expressions may hinder potential love interests.

When asked about the biggest misconception people have about him, he replies, “I think people think I am unapproachable or a bit intimidating. Some of my music can make people feel that way, but I’m really not. I’m down to earth; I’m an earth sign.”

Discussing dating in his 30s, Damez shares, “I think you just have to be a lot more intentional. Now that I’m in my 30s, dating is just different. When I was younger in my 20s, I was just going with the flow. Now it’s about being more intentional and knowing what you want.”

Never Satisfied is available on all music streaming platforms.
