Now THAT'S a plot twist...

Huh.

The often questionable rapper Eminem dropped his 12th album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), this Friday, July 12. Unsurprisingly, Eminem spends a lot of time in the LP complaining about "Political Correctness (PC) culture" — a term used by conservatives to negatively describe progressive people and ideas.

The second verse of the track "Antichrist" describes a situation where Eminem is "tryna get some head" inside a Subaru car, but the woman that he's with has "no clue what [she's] doing." After calling this woman a "fake sl*t," an irritated Eminem asks, "Did you drop dead in my lap? You call that head?"

Eminem follows up those questions with a truly unexpected revelation: "I suck my d*ck better than you do, haha."

One doesn't have to dig too deeply to find other instances of homoerotic and suggestive lyrics throughout Eminem's discography, but what makes this one stand out from past examples is just how specific it is.

For one, there were a million other ways (that didn't involve autofellatio) for Eminem to "dunk" on this woman who didn't satisfy him. Moreover, we've come to expect Eminem to be outwardly homophobic when referencing anything remotely gay. But Eminem saying that he's good at sucking d*ck isn't exactly a homophobic statement. Quite the opposite, actually: he's bragging about it.

Over the years, relying on shock value (often for no reason at all) has become a crutch for the 51-year-old rapper. But even in the grand scheme of shocking lyrics from Eminem as Slim Shady, it actually is pretty surprising to hear him "flex" about being good at pleasuring a penis with his mouth. Like, how did he find out that he could do that, for instance?

This new Eminem album conceptualizes the idea of killing Slim Shady — a "persona" that the rapper created to spit bars containing misogynistic, transphobic, ableist, homophobic, and other problematic language under the veil of a character. Some fans did wonder in the past few months if this album would be about Eminem atoning for his problematic past through the storytelling device of "killing" the character of Slim Shady. But no, that was not the case!

One thing about 2024: things are weird!

Eminem's The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) album is now available on all music streaming services.
