Pop star Jessie J apologized to her ex, a woman, in an unreleased song performed at an acoustic show in Los Angeles.
Out was in attendance at Monday night's intimate performance at the Teragram Ballroom on May 6. J kicked off the show in the balcony and as she walked down to the stage, she informed the audience that she was going to cover her career chronologically, then jumped into the first song she'd ever written, "Big White Room."
The second song she performed was an unreleased track that the internet has dubbed "Complicated," though no official title has been given. J sang about the stages of her career, but one lyric in particular shocked the room.
"2012, I broke up with my beautiful girlfriend," J sang in the opening lines. "With the press in my face, called it a phase, babe I'm sorry."
The crowd audibly gasped at the lyric.
The "Price Tag" singer first opened up about her bisexuality in 2011 but later called it a phase in 2014, telling The Mirrorthat she was ready to "stop talking about it completely" and find herself "a husband."
"For me, it was a phase," she explained at the time. "But I'm not saying bisexuality is a phase for everybody."
J clearly regrets that phrasing today.
Monday night's show went on to be casually chaotic as J strolled through her hits like "Bang Bang" and "Domino." On stage, she took the time to interact with the audience, acknowledged memes of her, recalled funny interactions with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, ribbed the crowd for not buying her second album, interacted with fans who traveled from Brazil and Ukraine, and even took a phone call from one attendee's very confused mother. She might be a deeply unserious woman, but man can she sing. J's voice remains one of the best in the world.
