Lady Gaga headlining huge, free Mayhem concert at Copacabana Beach

"It's a great honor to be asked to sing for Rio — for my whole career the fans in Brazil have been part of the lifeblood of the little monsters. I've been dying to come perform for you for years and was heartbroken when I had to cancel years ago because I was hospitalized," Gaga said on X. The last time she visited the country was in 2012. She was scheduled to play in Rio in 2017, but canceled the show due to being hospitalized.

"Your understanding that I needed that time to heal meant the world to me," Mother Monster continued. "I am now coming back and I feel better than ever and am working so hard to make sure this show is one you will never forget. Get ready for MAYHEM on the beach."

The concert is in conjunction with Todo Mundo no Rio, a new initiative meant to highlight entertainment in the city.

Gaga is getting ready to release her new album, Mayhem, which includes the singles "Die With a Smile," "Disease," and "Abracadabra." The album is set to be released March 7.

Last year another music icon, Madonna, did a similar concert on the beach as the final show of her The Celebration Tour. An estimated 1.6 million people attended that show, making it the biggest of Madonna's career.
