The singer announced the news on social media with a five-second video of her breathing. Just before the clip cuts to black, text pops up that reads "What Was That out Midnight ET."

Just last week, Lorde announced that her new solo track would be titled "What Was That." The song marks her first solo single since her 2021 album Solar Power.

She also updated her Instagram bio to read, "The themes are always the same — a return to innocence — the mysteries of the blood — an itch for the transcendental."

It's unclear if these words are actual lyrics from "What Was That," or are just teasing for her upcoming album, or something else entirely. Nonetheless, fans are excited.

The singer-songwriter celebrated the release of the song with a surprise appearance in Washington Square Park in New York City on Tuesday, April 22.

Thousands of people showed up to the event that was promptly shut down by police, but Lorde still managed to play "What Was That" for some fans.

Despite the scarcity of music as of late, Lorde fans have had quite the year after her remix of Charli xcx's "Girl, so confusing" broke the internet in 2024 and charted around the world. She also recently appeared with the "360" singer on stage at Coachella's explosive weekend 1 set.
