Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff hosted a star-studded LGBTQ+ Pride celebration with GLAAD — and the event brought together out luminaries from the worlds of politics, media, entertainment, and drag.
RuPaul’s Drag Race champion and goddess Sasha Colby emceed the program, which included remarks from Emhoff, GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis, and Sam Charney, an LGBTQ+ youth and gun control advocate from Colorado.
Alex Newell, fresh from their historic Tony win for Shucked, also performed Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” while the crowd (including Emhoff) sang along. And Harris delivered a stirring speech at the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., declaring, “Pride is patriotism,” as she highlighted her long career of fighting for LGBTQ+ equality as San Francisco district attorney, attorney general of California, U.S. senator, and within the Biden administration.
