The show was "renewed" for a second, four episode mini-season.
Just like in real life, the journey of the fictional Rockford Peaches is ending far too soon.
After months of talks with Sony TV, Amazon Prime Video announced that it renewed their critically acclaimed series A League of Their Own for a shortened, second and final season. The catch? (No pun intended.) The new season will only have four episodes.
The first season of A League of Their Own was one of the best things on television in the last decade. It showed women’s stories and queer women’s stories that we’d never seen before. It featured a diverse cast of fat women, Black women, gay women, Jewish women, Latina women, and more.
Created by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson, the show starred Jacobson, Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Roberta Collindrez, Kelly McCormack, Priscilla Delgado, Molly Ephraim, Kate Berlant, Melanie Field, and more as a team of WWII-era women’s professional baseball players. It also stars Rosie O’Donnell, Nick Offerman, and Lea Robinson.
The characters have so much room for growth and exploration, and there’s so, so much more to see in this world, so fans are reacting pretty harshly to the news that we’ll only get about four more hours of content.
“It's really heartbreaking that part of me is like ‘four final episodes of a league of their own, yay! closure' because the bar is legit on the ground when it comes to LGBTQ+ and diverse TV shows getting even a second season...it shouldn't be this hard,” tweeted Nora Dominick.
“a league of their own has the best poc and lgbt+ representation i have ever seen and it deserves so much more than a four episode second season,” added user @gillscarden.
Soon, series co-creator Will Graham commented, saying that the show had a huge domestic audience and was not a niche show. He also said that there is still a chance to get more of the show.
“The stuff that came out today is a leak and it isn't official, which is why we aren't saying anything. So if you want to see more episodes or more seasons of this show, now is your moment. People are listening.”
Now, the hashtags #ALeagueOfTheirOwn and #MoreThanFour have been trending, with fans demanding to get more of this vital, unique, and successful show.
A fan campaign even has a plane flying above the Amazon Studios with a message to renew the show for more than four episodes, hoping to draw more attention to the cause.
Just like the Peaches, now is the time for us to rally, and make sure that this life changing and media changing show doesn’t go quietly away like so many other queer shows that have been canceled far before their time.
