Joe Locke and Agatha All Along episode 5 broke the internet as Teen, his previously unnamed character, revealed himself to be the gay character Wiccan, a.k.a. Billy Kaplan, who's one of the Scarlet Witch's twin sons and will now serve as major LGBTQ+ representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) based on everything we know about Wiccan's storylines in the Marvel Comics, like falling in love with his Young Avengers teammate Hulkling a.k.a. Teddy Altman.

So, without further ado, let's catch you up on Wiccan's powers, origins, significant storylines, queer representation, and what to expect from him on Agatha All Along and beyond!

What are Wiccan's powers in the Marvel comics and the MCU?

Wiccan's powers include reality manipulation through magic, energy blasts, and teleportation, as outlined by Marvel. Other powers include astral projection, teleportation, telekinesis, telepathy, and transmutation, to name a few. In turn, Wiccan's biggest weakness in the comic books is that his magical powers don't work if he can't hear himself casting those spells.

One version of Wiccan's origin story has also proven that he can amplify his powers and basically become a god (more on that later!).

Where does Wiccan's crown come from, and what does it mean?

The reveal of Wiccan's crown on Agatha All Along episode 5 really drives home the point that the character previously known as Teen is actually Billy Kaplan, a.k.a. Billy Maximoff, one of the twin sons of the Scarlet Witch. This is because Wiccan's crown is extremely similar to the Scarlet Witch's crown, just in a different color.

Like any other comic book character, Wiccan has had many different versions depending on the timeline, series of comics, and/or adaptation that he's featured in. For the most part, Wiccan is seen wearing either a crown or a headband — and Joe Locke's version of the character on Agatha All Along has already been shown wearing both of those headpieces.

What are Wiccan's origin stories in the Marvel comics?

Wiccan is best known as one of the Scarlet Witch's twin sons in the Marvel comics. However, the character has had other origin stories in the comic books since his very first introduction.

When Wiccan first appeared in the Marvel comics as one of the Young Avengers, for instance, he was referred to as "the Asgardian" and was believed to have ties to Thor (via Marvel).

In the Vision and the Scarlet Witch #12 comic book from 1985, the Scarlet Witch used her reality-warping powers to create two sons for herself and Vision — the twins Billy and Tommy — given that an android, like Vision, was physically unable to have children with a human being, like Wanda.

To create Billy and Tommy, though, the Scarlet Witch used "two lost souls" that "turned out to be small parts of Mephisto's essence," as detailed by Marvel. Much like the WandaVision story, the Scarlet Witch successfully created a reality for herself that could technically fall apart — and it did. Upon learning how the Scarlet Witch created her kids, Mephisto reabsorbed his own fragmented energies back into himself, which erased Billy and Tommy from existence.

As members of the Young Avengers, Billy (who became Wiccan) and Tommy (who became Speed) only discovered their familial ties to the Scarlet Witch in 2008's Young Avengers Presents #3 comics. That information prompted the twins to search for their mother, leading to the Avengers: The Children's Crusade comic book series in 2010.

What is Wiccan's origin story in the MCU?

It's been clearly established that Wiccan/Billy has direct ties to Wanda Maximoff/the Scarlet Witch when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). After all, the character was depicted as a young boy on WandaVision and as a teenager on Agatha All Along.

With that said, some Marvel fans did notice how Wiccan's magical powers "look and sound like lightning or electricity" in the final scenes from episode 5… which could be a nod to Wiccan's other origin story as an Asgardian in the comics.

The future of Asgard in the MCU is an interesting topic to think about. So far, however, there's no indication that Wiccan will have ties to Thor, or Loki, or any other Asgardian in the cinematic universe.

Who is Hulkling, Wiccan's gay love interest in the comic books?

Hulkling was first introduced to Marvel fans in 2005 during the Young Avengers #1 series of comic books. Otherwise known as Teddy Altman, the Hulkling codename often misleads new fans to assume that he's associated with characters like Hulk and She-Hulk… but that is not the case!

In truth, Hulkling was the child of a "forbidden love story" between Princess Anelle (a female Skrull) and Captain Mar-Vell (a male Kree — not the Brie Larson version seen in the MCU), who fall in love in the thick of the Skrull-Kree war taking place in the Marvel comics. As an infant, Hulking is sent to Earth for his own safety, which is how he eventually joins the Young Avengers after discovering his superpowers.

With lineage from both the Kree and the Skrull, the character eventually becomes Emperor Hulkling and rules over both the Kree and the Skrull — a storyline from the Empyre comic book series published in 2020 (via Marvel).

Why is Wiccan and Hulkling's gay relationship such a big deal in the comics?

While Hulkling learns more about his dual Skrull-Kree heritage and becomes a staple hero within the Young Avengers, he also meets and falls in love with Wiccan. Specialized news outlets that cover comic books, as well as Marvel itself, consider Wiccan and Hulking to be the most prominent gay couple in the entire Marvel universe.

Between going on dates, fighting side-by-side as Young Avengers, having their first kiss, arguing like a couple, falling in love, coming out as a couple to their teammates and friends, moving in together, getting engaged, and finally getting married, Wiccan and Hulking's love story is an epic and adorable saga that queer Marvel fans have been obsessed with for years.

Who will play Hulkling in the MCU, and when will he be introduced?

It's still unclear when and how Hulkling/Teddy will be introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — particularly given that Wiccan/Billy was just introduced on Agatha All Along very recently. There is also no confirmed actor who's been picked to play Hulkling as of this writing.

On the other hand, there are some rumors about Miles Gutierrez-Riley playing Hulkling — a topic that was brought up in an interview for Variety during the premiere of Agatha All Along.

What did Joe Locke say about rumors that Kit Connor could play Hulkling in the MCU?

Some fans speculate that Joe Locke's Heartstopper costar, Kit Connor, has the build and the looks to portray Hulkling in the MCU. However, it's hard to imagine that Marvel would cast Locke and Connor as a couple after the actors had already spent years playing another queer couple on Netflix's Heartstopper.

Also, let's be real: Marvel did everything it could do to conceal Wiccan/Billy's identity under the guise that Locke was playing a character named Teen… so we'll probably have to be patient while waiting for any Hulkling casting updates.

Did Joe Locke tease the Wiccan reveal on 'Agatha All Along'?

Well, yes! Even though the cast of blockbuster movies and TV shows usually can't say much about the projects they're promoting, Joe Locke did suggest that a major event was happening on Agatha All Along episode 5. The actor said in an interview:

"There's a reason they've only sent the first four episodes out to the press."

Locke knew that his unnamed character, Teen, was Wiccan all along (pun intended) — and this response is further evidence that he was gently trying to warn gay Marvel fans to prepare themselves.
