It was a triumphant night for Baby Reindeer at the Emmys!
The Netflix series, created by and starring Richard Gadd and based loosely on events from his life, picked up four big Emmys tonight at the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
Baby Reindeer took home many of the night's biggest awards, including Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Supporting Actress, Outstanding Lead Actor, and Outstanding Limited Series.
Jessica Gunning won the Emmy for Supporting Actress for playing obsessive stalker Martha in a breakout role. Gadd won for both Writing and Lead Actor.
In his acceptance speech for Best Writing, Gadd spoke about the obstacles he's had to overcome.
"10 years ago, I was down and out. I never thought I would get my life together. I never thought I'd be able to rectify myself for what had happened to me and then here I am, over a decade later, picking up one of the biggest writing awards in television," he said. "Now, I don't mean that to sound arrogant, I mean that as encouragement for anyone who's going through a difficult time right now to persevere, yeah? I don't know much about this life, I don't know why we're here, none of that. But I do know that nothing lasts forever. No matter how bad it gets, it always gets better. So if you're struggling, keep going, keep going. And I promise you things will be ok."
In his speech for Outstanding Limited Series, Gadd mentioned that the industry is in a slump right now, "but I do believe that no slump is ever broken without a willingness to take risks."
"If Baby Reindeer has proven anything, it's that there's no set formula to this, and you don't need big stars, proven IP, long-running series, and catch-all stories to have a hit," he said. "Really, the only constant across any success in television is good storytelling. Good storytelling that speaks to our times. So take risks, push boundaries, explore the uncomfortable, Dare to fail in order to achieve."
