Following her wildly successful run in Chicago on Broadway, Jinkx Monsoon has now been cast to join the long-running Doctor Who TV series.

Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa has become the 15th Doctor on Doctor Who, making series history as the first gay Doctor. Meanwhile, Heartstopper actress Yasmin Finney has also been cast in the upcoming season, making this a very diverse group of actors in terms of LGBTQ+ visibility.

On Monday, April 3, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies announced the latest addition to the Whoniverse: Jinkx Monsoon, the winner of Drag Race season five and All Stars 7. Davies said in a statement:

“In a galaxy of comets and supernovas, here comes the biggest star of all. Jinkx Monsoon is on a collision course with the TARDIS, and Doctor Who will never be the same again.”

Monsoon wrote in a release, “I’m honored, thrilled, and utterly excited to join Doctor Who! Russell T. Davies is a visionary and a brilliant writer – I can’t wait to get into the weeds with him and the crew! I hope there’s room in the TARDIS for my luggage.”

Three special episodes of Doctor Who are scheduled to air in November 2023 as a celebration of the series’ 60th anniversary. However, the official 14th season of the show is set to air in 2024.

As she finishes off her Chicago run as Matron ‘Mama’ Morton, Monsoon has already announced a new summer tour and is set to appear in the second season of her WOW Presents Plus series, Sketchy Queens.
