After years of begging and pleading from the Beyhive, RuPaul's Drag Race finally decided to say my her name and blessed us with a "Night of 1000 Beyoncés" runway challenge. On last night's episode, we watched as the eight remaining queens heated up the catwalk in their best Sasha Fierce drag.
Despite the beauty on display, it is a shame we couldn't get looks from her Lady Gaga collab "Telephone" music video, or a dragged-up version of the white tank and jean booty shorts from the "Crazy In Love" video. If you're wondering why we didn't see any of her iconic looks from her music videos, it's because they are protected by copyright. According to some tea, contestants had to pick their look from a producer-approved list of Getty Images – which is why they were largely red-carpet appearances and live performances.
Let me be clear, I am not a drag queen and in no way possess the skills it takes to walk that runway like any of these stellar queens did, but if I were and music videos were allowed, I would've done the three Beyoncé looks from the "Lose My Breath" video, one reveal after another.
Still, it was an apeshit night for the Beyhive. We got some incredible moments (besides the "Single Ladies" lipsync that felt like a hate crime) and it was a stunning tribute to the Queen of Pop.
So here's our ranking of the runways...
Where's the baby bump?
LaDuca's tribute to Bey's pregnancy reveal is beautifully done, but missing a few key details to push it over the edge. The jacket isn't pink, the hair is a bit off, and most of all, her stomach was completely flat when she opened her jacket. Did she forget about Blue Ivy in there?
Because nothing says "iconic" quite like a Tidal red carpet event. It's a strong look from Marcia, but a few of the details on the dress and shoes are just off enough to distract. It doesn't scream "Beyoncé!" It's cute, but you know what they say about cute next to gorgeous?
If Anetra were ever going to wear a breastplate, now would've been the time to do it. This is a truly iconic look and the queen executed it perfectly, it's just missing... something I can't quite put my finger on that would've pushed it over the edge.
Now this FEELS like Beyoncé. Malaysia took the garment, added the zhuzhed-up Black Is King hair, and created a moment. She even got the glasses right! On top of looking beautiful, Malaysia nailed the attitude, and that pushed her ahead of her competitors. Too bad it couldn't make up for her performance in the challenge.
I clocked this look immediately, and Salina looks beautiful in it down to the jewelry details and hair. I loved that she added her classic EsTitties twist with the RuPaul Grammys, and it's an overall shining tribute to Bey's industry accomplishments.
The Bob Mackie dress is undeniably beautiful, and since RuPaul has worn it before (which I'm sure Luxx knew), it was an easy way to score points with the judge. There weren't too many details to mess up since it's literally just the dress, but I wanted the spirit of Beyoncé to possess Luxx and it simply didn't happen for me and I was a tad underwhelmed. Beautiful gowns though.
Everyone moved! When Mistress turned that corner with the heads of Kelly and Michelle resting on her shoulders, the entire room screamed. A hilarious tribute to one of the best girl groups of all time, Destony's Child. I expected nothing less from this Houston queen. Mistress looks beautiful, but Kelly's "Dilemma" hair with the red streak truly pushed it over the edge.
I legitimately thought Beyoncé's walked onto the stage. The look is perfect. Many of the queens could say that, but Sasha Colby straight-up was Beyoncé. The wig was the perfect ombré and had the perfect bounce. She even had the dance moves and mannerisms. Colby's star power is undeniable, and it pushed what could've been another good look into something iconic.
Now THIS is an iconic runway.
GAGGED. If she was still in the competition, Aura would've had one of the top looks of the night. This is what I was expecting when you say "Beyoncé runway." Every detail is beautiful, but still looks like Aura.
