We may not have a clue when the third season of Euphoria will drop, but creator Sam Levison just gave fans some hints at what we can expect.
In a new interview with Elle as part of a profile on Zendaya (who plays Rue on the show), Euphoria creator Sam Levinson said the forthcoming season will be shot like a “film noir” and he plans to use Rue to “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.”
Shooting the series like a film noir makes sense for a show that has frequently used creative lighting to heighten the emotions and drama on screen, a technique that will work seamlessly for homaging noir which is known for its lighting choices. Plus we'd love to see Zendaya as a femme fatale!
Of the actress herself, Levinson talked about her impressive work ethic.
"She's the most competitive person I know, in a good way," he said in the profile, which was published on Aug. 23. "She's constantly growing as an artist and always seeking a challenge. She's never complacent."
While Levinson wants to explore a “corrupt world, ” Zendaya told Extra last year that she’s hoping her character is sober in season three.
"I would like to explore Rue's sobriety and that journey for her," she said a few months after the season two finale. "We see her in the midst of it. It would be nice to see her closer to the other side."
According to reporting by Screen Rant, we can also expect a time jump in the new season, meaning our beloved characters will be saying goodbye to high school and we’ll catch up with them in college five years after season two ended. This makes a lot of sense for a show that stars actors who are mostly in their late twenties and it will make it easier to explain the absence of two key characters.
Barbie Ferreira, who played Kat on the show, decided not to come back for the next season because she didn’t want to keep playing the “fat best friend,” she explained recently on an episode of the Armchair Expert podcast.
Drug dealer Fez will also have to be written out of the show because actor Angus Cloud died unexpectedly last month.
Despite the new info about season three, we’ll likely have to wait until at least late 2024 for it to premiere because of the current SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike. But this is nothing new for fans who had to wait three years in between the first and second seasons.
The first two seasons of Euphoria are currently streaming on Max.
