Stop playing with our heartstrings, Kit!!

Gird your loins, Heartstopper fans! Kit Connor, beloved internet boyfriend and one of the series' lead stars, opened up about the fate of the still unannounced fourth season, and it may not be what many are expecting...

The 20-year-old bisexual actor, who rose to international fame after the 2022 debut of Heartstopper, the live-action Netflix adaptation of Alice Oseman's queer teen graphic novel series of the same name, is part of The Hollywood Reporter's "Next Gen Talent 2024" list, and in his profile, it is revealed that Connor "isn't sure" the beloved show will return for a fourth season. (Heartstopper season 3 debuted in October of this year.)

"Connor, 20, isn't sure if Heartstopper will return for a fourth season," the THR profile reads. "But after the curtain goes down on his Broadway stint, he'll start promoting his most adult role yet in Alex Garland's A24 thriller Warfare."

"I'd like to take a little break just so that I can kind of cleanse my mind and my palate, and then I'd like to do something completely different," Connor told the trade of his future plans. "I want to try and spend the next couple years just doing quite hard stuff so that I can try and force myself to get better."

This isn't the first time someone close to the Heartstopper team has spilled some tea on the potentiality of a fourth season.

During a October appearance on the I've Never Said This Before podcast, Alice Oseman, the author of the best-selling graphic novel series Heartstopper is based on, said that if a fourth season of the show were to happen, it would probably be its last.

"I really really just want to tell the end of the story on TV and bring all of those characters, their stories, to a close," Oseman said. "So fingers crossed."

"So four would be the end?" podcast host Tommy DiDario asked.

"Yeah, for sure," Oseman replied.

Oseman also told Netflix's Tudum that "As much as I — and everyone else — want the final installment to come to the screen as soon as possible, there are a lot of moving parts to account for that make it hard to solidify anything. But we're doing our best, and will let fans know as soon as we can."

The continued: "There's nothing that I can really share yet. I feel like viewers of the show hopefully know that I'm very open and honest online about the process and what's going on with production. So of course, I will share anything when I'm able to — but that's all there is at the moment."

While many fans would love to see the show go on as long as it can, we'll have to wait and see for more updates to the story and see if a fourth season of Heartstopper will become a reality.

The first three seasons of Heartstopper are streaming on Netflix.
