Nicholas Galitzine is quickly becoming a Hollywood superstar — and a fan-favorite actor among LGBTQ+ audiences.
During an interview for his new, chaotic, horny AF limited series Mary & George, Galitzine, and his costar Tony Curran, share their experiences making the show and connecting with fans.
Between Red, White & Royal Blue, Bottoms, The Idea of You, and now Mary & George, Galitzine’s performances have been resonating with LGBTQ+ audiences from around the world. As a result, the actor is known to break the internet whenever he interacts with fans or shares an update about a new project.
“It’s incredibly humbling,” Galitzine tells Out. “You make these projects, and sometimes I fall into the line of thinking that no one’s ever going to watch it. [That] it’s just going to go into this sort of abyss, and it’s on to the next thing. I’ve been so floored in the last few years that people have consumed my content, have really supported me, and pushed me forward in my career.”
He adds, “I love meeting these people out and about, in various cities that I’ve been working in the last few years, and just talking about what it means to them. If there’s one thing that I have a sense of spirituality around, it’s to be able to have resonance with people. I’m so pleased that a lot of my projects have had that for people.”
In the series, George is a complex character that requires a very nuanced performance from an actor. Thankfully, Galitzine brings this person to life in a fully-realized manner that keeps us intrigued and interested to explore his many different layers.
Galitzine informed his performance by “knowing the historical context of who the man was and how he grew in his power and influence,” he explains. “With every character, I like to find the light and the shade within them. The light was the deep sense of vulnerability and fragility that we meet him with, and the shade was the point of megalomania that he gets to in his life… the corruption and the darkness that I feel like surrounds him as a person. It was all there in this wonderful script by D. C. Moore, so I feel very lucky we had the materials there to play with.”
Curran, who is Scottish himself, is no stranger to playing characters in movies about the history of Scotland. He previously starred in Outlaw King, and is now exploring a different period in Scottish history with Mary & George.
“What I find compelling is that you think about British history, or global [history], or my Scottish history, and you start uncovering stones about that particular time,” Curran tells Out. “It’s fascinating how much I didn’t actually know about King James, for instance. Or know about the time of Robert the Bruce when I was working on Outlaw King.”
He continues, “When you start doing a deep dive or talking to someone like Benjamin Woolley, who wrote The King’s Assassin, it’s just fascinating [to see] the time and the man himself, King James. The texture about his personality and gregariousness, his thirst for life, for hedonism, for hunting, for literature, for writing. And the idea of not actually wanting to go to war as well, which I thought was an interesting part of his makeup. But as Nick mentioned, I think a lot of this was in the script. The characters were so sort of well fleshed out, and it was an absolute joy to play them and to see those beautiful words on the page.”
