If you loved The Golden Girls, then get ready to fall in love with a new set of golden gays.

Hulu’s latest series, Mid-Century Modern, and its gay and ally ensemble cast are a shining reminder that queer characters can lead and thrive in television. With a lineup of award-winning talent, the show stars Tony Award-winner Nathan Lane, Golden Globe recipient Matt Bomer, and Grammy Award-winner Nathan Lee Graham. The series also features the late Linda Lavin, who played Lane’s mother, adding a heartfelt touch to its debut.

Last week, Out covered the star-studded premiere, where the cast shared the best piece of dating advice they’ve ever received from a gay man — offering a mix of humor, wisdom, and unexpected gems.

“I’m not too certain if a gay man told me this, but you have to love yourself before you can love anybody else,” Lane reflected, dropping a timeless truth.

Meanwhile, Richard Kind, who plays a gay friend and brief suitor of Lane's character Bunny, took a more unexpected turn, sharing a memory from his younger days.

“When I was a waiter at a place called The Saloon — which is now a Lululemon across the street from Lincoln Center — there was a very gay waiter in his 30s who told me, ‘If you ever meet a sailor who wants to have sex with you, do yourself a favor and take it.’” He then laughed and added, “But the thing is, I’m not gay.”

For Bomer, the best relationship advice came from his lifelong role models — his grandparents: “I think dating and relationship advice applies to everyone. My grandparents, who are my heroes when it comes to relationships, have been together since eighth grade, and they told me to take it one day at a time.”

He also recalled a moment of personal growth during a date. “Someone once told me, in the most sincere way, to relax,” he said.

“My shoulders went down, I took off some of the armor, and we ended up having a good time. I was so focused on presenting myself in a certain way, and we have so many things in our community that get us caught up.”
