Nick Offerman teases possibility of Bill and Frank-centric The Last of Us spin-off
The Last of Us fans are eagerly awaiting the next installment of HBO's hit video game adaptation, but could we be getting a spin-off as well? According to Nick Offerman…maybe so.
The actor took home his first Emmy over the weekend for his guest role as Bill, a survivalist who reluctantly fell in love with Frank (Murray Bartlett) after civilization collapsed. Their story culminated in tragedy, and the episode centering them was largely applauded by everyone outside of the usual raging homophobes.
It was also wildly clear that there was so much of their story that could have been told prior to their appearance on The Last of Us, and Offerman alluded to that when asked backstage at the Creative Arts Emmys about a potential spin-off.
"It certainly has been pitched. I think we pitched, like, how about a whole mini-series of a prequel of their lives before they meet each other,” he said.
He also joked that it “could be a musical,” and acknowledged that co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are “not short on ideas” for expanding the world of the show as far as Bill and Frank go.
The possibility of a spin-off centering these characters has been bounced around by fans before, thanks to how touching their love story was.
Considering how successful season one of The Last of Us was for HBO, it wouldn’t at all be shocking to see at least one spin-off come forward in the future. But for now, the focus seems to be on bringing season two to our screens, so we’ll have to wait awhile longer to find out how the world of the series may expand beyond that.
As Offerman quipped, “I would have to ask somebody with a higher pay grade than myself.”
