Get ready to set sail again with the crew of The Revenge in Our Flag Means Death season 2!
Vanity Fair has a first look at the upcoming second season of the hit Max show starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi as two pirates in love. The new season sees the return of season one’s stars, plus some new faces, as shown by the new images.
Season one of the hit Max show ended with Stede (Darby) and Blackbeard (Waititi) seperated once again. We don't know much about plot details of season two so far, but the article does give us some clues.
The new cast members include Madeleine Sami and Anapela Polataivao (who will be joining the pirate crew this season), Ruibo Qian (who plays a mysterious merchant named Susan), and most notably, Minnie Driver as famous pirate Anne Bonny.
Vico Ortiz, who plays nonbinary pirate Jim, said in the article that their character will really grow this season.
“They’re a bit more chatty and a bit more conversational,” they said. “Most of the first season you see Jim in disguise, hiding, but in this one you see them a bit more [thinking,] ‘Oh, this is my chosen family, and I feel good.’ There’s a bit more zaniness and a bit more softness.”
They also spoke about what it was like seeing the fan reaction to the show, and its queer characters, after season one.
“It’s so beautiful to see that people are finding community within the fan base,” they said. “It’s about creating spaces where we feel safe and seen, and it’s so great to see that so many people watch the show and feel safe and seen, and it’s so great to see that so many people watch the show and feel validated in their experiences, whatever that may be. A lot of people that watch the show are like, ‘Yeah I”m a guy and it’s good to see all these dudes being vulnerable.’ We can just shake up [ideas about gender].”
The article also promises that season two will be bigger and more impressive than season one, with more sets, more costumes, and more characters.
“The viewers will see the scope of their world has expanded based on the fact we’re able to get to these amazing locations within a short travel time,” executive producer Antoine Douaihy said. “You will notice a marked difference between the two seasons in terms of the scope and the scale.’’
Our Flag Means Death season 2 debuts on Max this October.
