This year, RuPaul’s Drag Race is celebrating 15 years and as many as 200 episodes.
Past landmark moments in the flagship series include the celebration of 100 episodes during the season eight premiere and the 10th anniversary celebration at the grand finale of season 10. To celebrate its 200th episode, Drag Race season 15 is bringing back the show’s iconic photobomb mini challenge. This time, the queens are inserted into iconic scenes from past seasons.
First up, Salina EsTitties photobombs Laganja Estranja’s werk room entrance dip. Anetra is edited into Willow Pill’s whacky talent show number. Malaysia Babydoll Foxx is added behind Vanessa Vanjie Mateo during her unforgettable “Miss Vanjie” exit line. Spice photobombs Lady Gaga entering the werk room for the grand premiere of season nine.
Then, Luxx Noir London pretends to push down Vivacious while she was doing the season six premiere photoshoot. Mistress Isabelle Brooks is added in between RuPaul and Morgan McMichaels during a hilarious werk room segment. Marcia Marcia Marcia pretends to be an angry runner-up during the first crowning of Jinkx Monsoon back in season five. Sasha Colby photobombs Mama Ru sitting in the judging panel for the DESPY Awards of season seven. Last but not least, Loosey LaDuca is edited as if she was holding onto Serena ChaCha’s leg during the underwater photoshoot for the season five premiere.
This week’s maxi challenge is a ball, and the queens are asked to present three sickening looks on the runway. First category is “Start Your Engines,” where the queens are challenged to update Mama Ru’s classic racing suit in a way that’s never been seen before. Second category is “My Favorite Ball,” where the queens must recreate a look from a past ball challenge and make it their own. The third and final category is “Crystallized Eleganza,” which must be created from scratch using provided materials… as long as the end result is serving the full “dripping in crystals” fantasy.
This is an incredibly joyous moment for longtime Drag Race fans and a testament to how successful this franchise has become over the years. 200 episodes is a significant feat, and these queens are getting to celebrate it in full eleganza extravaganza!
We can’t wait to see how this turns out.
RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15 airs Fridays on MTV.
