After going through a variety of challenges that involve acting, writing, singing, dancing, lip sync performances, comedy, improv, design, sewing, modeling, and branding, it's quite a monumental achievement for a drag performer to reach the grand finale of RuPaul's Drag Race. Win, lose, or draw, getting to that final episode and competing for the title of America's Next Drag Superstar is absolutely fierce.
Seasons 1 through 8 of Drag Race, which aired on Logo TV, had finale episodes that narrowed down the competition to a top 3. Following the introduction of the "lip sync for the crown smackdown" format on Drag Race season 9, the series mostly had a top 4. The very few notable exceptions include season 12 (top 3 as a result of a finalist being disqualified); season 14 (top 5 for the first time in Drag Race herstory); and season 16 (top 3 finale not filmed in front of a live theater audience).
The Drag Race finales also had a major change starting with season 14, which was kept even as the flagship series moved to MTV — instead of a lip sync bracket, each finalist can craft an original song and deliver a final performance during the episode. Two finalists are then picked to lip sync for the crown, which determines the winner of the season.
Scroll through to explore every single finalist queen in the flagship RuPaul's Drag Race series — and don't forget that all 16 seasons of the show are available for streaming on Paramount+.
BeBe Zahara Benet on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 1.
Logo TV
BeBe Zahara Benet became the first-ever winner of RuPaul's Drag Race after winning two maxi challenges and only landing in the bottom two once. During that sole lip sync for her life, Benet sent Ongina home.
Nina Flowers on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 1.
Logo TV
Nina Flowers got to the finale of Drag Race season 1 without ever landing in the bottom. In turn, Flowers won a maxi challenge in the competition and was considered a fan-favorite.
Rebecca Glasscock on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 1.
Logo TV
Despite lip syncing for her life twice and only winning one maxi challenge, Rebecca Glasscock clawed her way to the finale of Drag Race season 1 alongside BeBe Zahara Benet and Nina Flowers.
Tyra Sanchez on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 2.
Logo TV
James Ross, a.k.a. King Tyra, competed as Tyra Sanchez on the second season of Drag Race and ultimately snatched the crown. Throughout the competition, Tyra won three maxi challenges and never landed in the bottom two.
Raven on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 2.
Logo TV
Raven won two maxi challenges during her run in season 2: a branding challenge about crafting your own autobiography, and the makeover challenge. Meanwhile, Raven also had two bottom placements prior to reaching the finale.
Jujubee on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 2.
Logo TV
Jujubee got to the season 2 finale without winning a maxi challenge but having lip synced for her life three times. Overall, Jujubee sent home Sahara Davenport, Pandora Boxx, and Tatianna.
Raja on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 3.
Logo TV
Raja was crowned during one of the most competitive Drag Race seasons in herstory, facing off against two finalists who had similar track records in terms of challenge wins. Overall, Raja won three maxi challenges in season 3 and only had to lip sync for her life once.
Manila Luzon on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 3.
Logo TV
Manila Luzon had the exact same track record as Raja in the competition: three maxi challenge wins and one bottom placement. In the end, though, Luzon was the runner-up of Drag Race season 3.
Alexis Mateo on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 3.
Logo TV
Alexis Mateo became a finalist in the third season of Drag Race after also winning three challenges. And yet, Mateo had to lip sync for her life three times, which was a big disadvantage for her upon reaching that final episode.
Sharon Needles on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 4.
Logo TV
The winner of Drag Race season 4, Sharon Needles, became the first queen in herstory to win four maxi challenges during a season. Moreover, Needles only had to lip sync for her life once, against Phi Phi O'Hara, which was void due to Willam's disqualification from the show.
Chad Michaels on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 4.
Logo TV
The fourth season of Drag Race showcased Chad Michaels winning two maxi challenges and lip syncing for her life once, which was a pretty solid track record for a finalist.
Phi Phi O'Hara on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 4.
Logo TV
Largely considered the "villain of the season" by viewers, Phi Phi O'Hara still fought her way to the grand finale of Drag Race season 4. In the competition, O'Hara won two maxi challenges and only had one bottom placement.
Jinkx Monsoon on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 5.
Logo TV
Jinkx Monsoon won the landmark Snatch Game challenge, as well as an acting challenge, during her run in the fifth season of Drag Race. Besides those two maxi challenges, the Seattle queen only lip synced for her life once, against Detox, right before the grand finale — and Monsoon was subsequently crowned America's Next Drag Superstar.
Alaska on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 5.
Logo TV
Alaska never had to lip sync for her life on Drag Race season 5 (not even once!), but she did win two maxi challenges throughout the competition. There's no denying that she was a strong contender for the crown, but Monsoon was the clear frontrunner for the crown, and that's how the finale played out.
Roxxxy Andrews on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 5.
Logo TV
Roxxxy Andrews had a similar trajectory as Jinkx Monsoon — which was ironic at the time — as she reached the finale of Drag Race season 5 with two maxi challenge wins and a single bottom placement. Nonetheless, it seemed pretty clear that this wasn't Andrews' year to win due to the perceived "villain edit" that she received while the season was airing.
Bianca Del Rio on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 6.
Logo TV
Bianca Del Rio steamrolled the competition on Drag Race season 6, becoming the first-ever New York City winner of the flagship series. In total, Del Rio won three maxi challenges and never had to lip sync for her life.
Adore Delano on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 6.
Logo TV
Adore Delano clawed her way to the top of season 6 after lip syncing twice on the show and winning three maxi challenges. Throughout the competition, Delano won a hip hop girl-group challenge, a branding challenge, and a design challenge.
Courtney Act on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 6.
Logo TV
Without having to lip sync for her life at any point in season 6, Courtney Act was another strong contender for the crown. The Australian superstar also won two maxi challenges on Drag Race, proving how talented and polished she's always been.
Violet Chachki on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 7.
Logo TV
At the time, the crowning of Violet Chachki on Drag Race season 7 was rather polarizing despite her solid performance in the competition — which included three maxi challenge wins and zero lip syncs for her life. In fact, Chachki's track record was exactly the same as Tyra Sanchez's in season 2 and Bianca Del Rio in season 6. Over time, though, this queen has truly proven that she was meant to become America's Next Drag Superstar, indeed.
Ginger Minj on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 7.
Logo TV
Ginger Minj also won three maxi challenges on Drag Race season 7, but she landed in the bottom two twice. There's no denying that those bottom placements put her at a disadvantage despite being a finalist in the season.
Pearl on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 7.
Logo TV
It was a roller-coaster ride for Pearl to get to the finale of season 7. Overall, that journey included two maxi challenge wins and two lip syncs for her life, having sent home queens like Trixie Mattel and Miss Fame.
Bob the Drag Queen on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 8.
Logo TV
Bob the Drag Queen was the frontrunner of season 8 throughout the entire competition. In total, Bob won three maxi challenges: an acting challenge, the Snatch Game, and a branding challenge about political campaigns. On the flip side, this Drag Race legend only lip synced for her life once.
Kim Chi on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 8.
Logo TV
With two maxi challenge wins and no bottom placements, Kim Chi got to the grand finale of Drag Race season eight with a very solid track record. Nonetheless, Bob just felt like a stronger contender to become America’s Next Drag Superstar, which meant that this wasn’t Chi’s year.
Naomi Smalls on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 8.
Logo TV
The judges largely saw Naomi Smalls as a “runway queen,” despite her best attempts at proving them wrong time and time again. Over the course of season eight, Smalls won one maxi challenge and lip synced for her life once, sending Acid Betty home.
Sasha Velour on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 9.
VH1
Sasha Velour was one of the fan-favorites of Drag Race season 9… but with only two maxi challenge wins under her belt, she wasn't exactly seen as having the strongest track record of the competition. And yet, Velour gave us the iconic rose petal reveal at the inaugural lip sync for the crown smackdown at the grand finale, which solidified her as America's Next Drag Superstar.
Peppermint on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 9.
VH1
Peppermint won a maxi challenge on Drag Race and lip synced for her life twice, sending home Cynthia Lee Fontaine and Alexis Michelle. Though she was considered an underdog in terms of track records, Peppermint lip synced her way to the top 2 of season 9 and finished as the runner-up.
Shea Couleé on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 9.
VH1
With four maxi challenge wins and only one bottom placement, Shea Couleé had the strongest track record of Drag Race season 9. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to gag the judges and the fans with her lip sync performance at the finale, which gave Velour the edge to snatch the crown.
Trinity the Tuck on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 9.
VH1
In technical terms, Trinity the Tuck also had a stronger track record than Velour on season 9. She had won three maxi challenges, after all, and her only time lip syncing for her life was the absolute obliteration of Charlie Hides. Much like Couleé, though, Trinity was outperformed by Peppermint at her final lip sync, finishing this season as a top 4 finalist.
Aquaria on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 10.
VH1
The milestone 10th season of Drag Race showcased Aquaria winning three maxi challenges and never landing in the bottom two. That track record, plus her storyline as a queen who grew up watching this series as a source of inspiration, were the perfect alignment for her crowning as the winner of season 10.
Eureka on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 10.
VH1
Eureka won two maxi challenges and lip synced for her life twice, so her track record was pretty evened out going into the finale of season 10. Ultimately, though, she finished the competition as a runner-up.
Kameron Michaels on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 10.
VH1
Kameron Michaels secured a spot at the Drag Race season 10 finale after winning one maxi challenge and lip syncing for her life three times. Kameron tied a lip sync with Eureka, then proceeded to send home Monét X Change and Miz Cracker, and performed her way to the final lip sync for the crown.
Asia O'Hara on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 10.
VH1
A huge fan-favorite during the entirety of Drag Race season 10, Asia O'Hara unfortunately fumbled her "butterfly reveal" at the grand finale. Alas, O'Hara did win two maxi challenges and only landed in the bottom once, making her a strong finalist in the competition.
Yvie Oddly on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 11.
VH1
Despite only winning one maxi challenge, Yvie Oddly had an impressive overall performance throughout season 11 of Drag Race. Even her singular bottom two placement was into the legendary "Sorry Not Sorry" (by Demi Lovato) lip sync against Brooke Lynn Hytes, which basically felt like another challenge win for Oddly. In the end, she was crowned America's Next Drag Superstar by Mama Ru — and deservedly so.
Brooke Lynn Hytes on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 11.
VH1
Brooke Lynn Hytes had a very strong track record among the Drag Race season 11 finalists: three maxi challenge wins and two bottom placements. However, she ultimately didn't win the lip sync for the crown against Yvie Oddly, finishing as the runner-up of the season.
A'Keria C. Davenport on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 11.
VH1
A'Keria C. Davenport won two challenges in season 11 and had to lip sync for her life twice before getting to the finale. In the competition, A'Keria first sent home Honey Davenport in the gag-worthy six-way lip sync for your life that followed the "Diva Worship" challenge. She eliminated Ra'Jah O'Hara a few episodes later, and ultimately reached the top 4 of the show.
Silky Nutmeg Ganache on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 11.
VH1
After a very chaotic journey in season 11, Silky Nutmeg Ganache made it to the grand finale with her undeniable charisma, veteran drag experience, and bigger-than-life personality. While the judges certainly loved Ganache, season 11 just wasn't her year to snatch the crown.
Jaida Essence Hall on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 12.
VH1
The grand finale of Drag Race season 12 was entirely filmed on a Zoom call as a result of the 2020 lockdown. After winning three maxi challenges and only placing in the bottom once, Jaida Essence Hall snatched the crown with a lip sync filmed in her very own living room. Iconic, if you ask us!
Crystal Methyd on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 12.
VH1
Crystal Methyd was an underdog throughout season 12, but her ongoing evolution landed her a spot at the grand finale. In the competition, Methyd won one maxi challenge and lip synced for her life once, sending Jackie Cox home right before the finale.
Gigi Goode on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 12.
VH1
One of the most spotless track records in Drag Race herstory came from Gigi Goode, who was a finalist on Drag Race season 12 after winning four maxi challenges and never landing in the bottom.
Symone on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 13.
VH1
Symone won four maxi challenges on Drag Race season 13, and lip synced for her life twice. During her journey to become America's Next Drag Superstar, Symone won a performance challenge, an acting challenge, a branding challenge, and a makeover challenge. She was also a sensational lip syncer, which made her basically unbeatable in the series.
Kandy Muse on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 13.
VH1
Kandy Muse won a maxi challenge and had to lip sync for her life three times. Overall, Muse sent home Tamisha Iman and Olivia Lux, and was saved by RuPaul after losing a lip sync to Symone during the competition. In any case, this legendary Drag Race performer fought her way to the top 2 and finished season 13 as the runner-up.
Gottmik on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 13.
VH1
Without any bottom placements throughout Drag Race season 13, Gottmik managed to win two maxi challenges on the show — making it all the way to the grand finale.
Rosé on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 13.
VH1
Rosé also got to the season 13 finale without ever placing in the bottom. In turn, this New York City queen won three maxi challenges on the show.
Willow Pill on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 14.
VH1
Willow Pill won the ball challenge of Drag Race season 14 and had a high placement in several challenges on the show. On the other hand, Pill had two bottom placements that season: once for the Snatch Game (where, with the exception of DeJa Skye, the entire cast was in the bottom), and a second time in the Rumix challenge. In the end, though, this creative genius was crowned America's Next Drag Superstar.
Lady Camden on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 14.
VH1
After winning three maxi challenges and only landing in the bottom once — as a result of the catastrophic season 14 Snatch Game — Lady Camden got to the Drag Race finale with a solid track record. At the finale, Camden made it to the top 2 alongside Willow Pill and finished the season as the runner-up.
Angeria Paris VanMicheals on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 14.
VH1
With two maxi wins and two bottom placements, Angeria Paris VanMicheals' track record was pretty evened out as she arrived at the grand finale of season 14.
Bosco on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 14.
VH1
Bosco had a truly wild trajectory in season 14 that included three maxi challenge wins and two lip syncs for her life. She lost one of those lip syncs and was officially eliminated, but was then saved by the "chocolate bar" twist of the season. Ultimately, Bosco ended her Drag Race run as a finalist.
Daya Betty on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 14.
VH1
Daya Betty was effectively eliminated in the second episode of Drag Race season 14, but was brought back to the competition in episode 3 along with Orion Story. In total, Betty's Drag Race track record included one maxi challenge and three lip syncs for her life.
Sasha Colby on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 15.
MTV
Sasha Colby entered Drag Race season 15 as a well-established drag legend, and she did not disappoint in the competition. After winning four maxi challenges and never landing in the bottom, Colby added another huge title to her resumé: Drag Race season 15 champion, a.k.a. America's Next Drag Superstar.
Anetra on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 15.
MTV
Anetra walked that f*cking duck to the grand finale of Drag Race season 15 after winning three challenges and having two bottom placements. Her challenge wins included the Variety Show, the Rusical, and the makeover challenge. In the end, this Las Vegas queen lip synced for the crown against Sasha Colby and finished the season as the runner-up.
Luxx Noir London on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 15.
MTV
Luxx Noir London won two maxi challenges and had high placements throughout most of season 15. In turn, she only had to lip sync for her life once, which culminated in Loosey LaDuca's elimination. Ultimately, Luxx was a fierce finalist who had an incredible run on Drag Race.
Mistress Isabelle Brooks on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 15.
MTV
Mistress Isabelle Brooks won the "Daytona Wind 2" acting challenge and only landed in the bottom once — delivering an iconic lip sync against Anetra right before the finale. Thankfully, both queens survived that battle and made it to the grand finale.
Nymphia Wind on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 16.
MTV
Throughout her journey in season 16, Nymphia Wind solidified herself as one of the most entertaining, talented, and beloved contestants in Drag Race herstory. She proudly represented Taiwan, won three maxi challenges — ball challenge, girl-groups challenge, and book branding challenge — and never had to lip sync for her life. At the finale, Wind won the lip sync for the crown to the tune of Kylie Minogue's "Padam Padam."
Sapphira Cristál on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 16.
MTV
Sapphira Cristál entered Drag Race season 16 already being a legendary drag artist, and she did not disappoint when it came to the competition. Overall, this Philly queen won four maxi challenges: the Variety Show (episode 1), the Rumix challenge, the stand-up challenge, and a design challenge. Cristál also made herstory for winning three consecutive maxi challenges. Meanwhile, she only had to lip sync for her life once (sending Morphine Love Dion home). At the finale, Cristál got to lip sync for the crown against Nymphia Wind and finished the season as runner-up.
Plane Jane on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 16.
MTV
Another queen who won four maxi challenges and went on to become a finalist on Drag Race season 16, Plane Jane was considered a polarizing contestant for being her unfiltered self. Her wins included the Variety Show (episode 2), the Snatch Game, a design challenge, and the makeover challenge. Plane lip synced for her life once, against Q, and sent her home. While she didn't get to lip sync for the crown, Plane still made it to the finale alongside Nymphia Wind and Sapphira Cristál.
