Molly Kearney is making SNL history!
Molly Kearney is letting trans kids everywhere know they can fly just like them.
In a new Weekend Update segment that had serious Chris Farley levels of ridiculousness, Saturday Night Live’s first nonbinary cast member Molly Kearney passionately and hilariously defended trans kids and reminded them how special they are.
Kearney used their platform to defend trans kids
Kearney started the segment by being lowered from the ceiling via a harness to join Colin Jost and Michael Che at the Weekend Update desk.
“I have been hung up on my genitals for far too long, and I’m starting to feel like a freaking Republican lawmaker,” Kearney shouted as they reached their seat.
Che then brought up how over 14 states have now passed bills restricting healthcare for trans kids, and Kearney went off.
“Listen to that Michael – restricting healthcare for kids. For some reason, there’s something about the word ‘trans’ that makes people forget the word, ‘kids,’” they said. “If you don’t care about trans kids’ lives, that means you don’t care about freakin’ kids’ lives.”
After some more hilarious jokes about pronouns and how people treat trans people, Kearney was lifted up by their harness again and had one more message for trans kids: "What's happening, kids, is wrong, and you don't need to be scared. Our job is to protect you and your job is to focus on being a kid. It's kind of like me flying in the SNL sky. There's a bunch of dudes asking you about your crotch and controlling when and where you're allowed to be, but if you just hang on, you'll look up and realize you're flying, kid."
Kearney recently joined SNL
SNL is set to be Kearney’s big breakout. They were born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and performed comedy in Chicago before moving to Los Angeles. They were featured on Comedy Central’s Up Next showcase in 2019.
They've previously appeared in some acting roles
Kearney has previously acted in one episode of A League of Their Own and four episodes of the Disney+ show The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. They were announced as SNL’s first nonbinary cast member when they joined the show for its 48th season in 2022.
