Editor's note: This article contains SPOILERS for episode 3 of The White Lotus season 3, titled "The Meaning of Dreams."
"This is what it looks like before a tsunami."
Episode 3 opens in the midst of a hazy blue dream. Victoria Ratliff (Parker Posey) is on the beach in Thailand. Her youngest son, Lochlan, is just out of reach. Their house has been dropped on the beachfront. She looks around wonderingly, but where did the water go? "This is what it looks like before a tsunami," says Lochlan. The camera zooms out to a stunning wide shot with Victoria in the middle, waiting for a tidal wave to wash her away.
"It might be a warning," Piper Ratliff (Sarah Catherine Hook) says at family breakfast. It certainly feels like one.

Timothy Ratliff (Jason Isaacs) fully spirals as his family chatters around him. The FBI has raided his North Carolina office. His business partners have sold him out. He's undoubtedly going to jail. And his family has no idea. Perhaps it is time for that hotel phone ban, so no one in his family finds out what's going on.
The non tax-evaders are set to enjoy their days. Lochlan's been signed up for corrective posture treatment. Belinda's sinking into her various treatment lessons, and something seems to be brewing between her and Pornchai. Jaclyn requests an energy session for Laurie with the muscly tatted hunk Valentin, but we'd keep an eye on him. In episode 2, Valentin distracted gate worker Gaitok just long enough for a black van to slip inside the White Lotus, which was later robbed at gunpoint. Things with him might not be what they seem...
Meanwhile, the oh-so-sweet but oblivious Gaitok wants to be Sritala Hollinger's personal bodyguard, then brags about it to Mook to show he does have some aspirations in life.
Chelsea and Chloe also spend time spilling the tea on Greg, err, Gary's late ex-wife and heiress, Tanya McQuoid, played by Jennifer Coolidge.
"He never talks about her," Chloe says. "All I know was that she was a real mental patient, like killed herself bad. One day she was so depressed she couldn't take it anymore. She just walked out into the ocean and kept going and never came back. All they found was a part of her leg."
Rick blows off Chelsea after he decides he's heading to Bangkok, but she's not letting him go that easily, and she jumps up from her gossip session with Chloe to follow him, giving Saxon the perfect entry to make his move on Chloe. "I hear you're a douche," she says to him with a smile. She invites Saxon onto Gary's boat party the next day for some reason.
In a desperate attempt to escape his crumbling reality, Timothy, for the first time, takes one of Victoria's lorazepam pills, a sedative that treats anxiety and depression. He finally gets some sleep, but fingers crossed he doesn't combine it with alcohol...
After smoking some marijuana, Chelsea and Rick end up at a Snake Show, but Rick is troubled instead of entertained by the caged cobras. He sneaks out mid-show and decides to set the snakes free, popping open their entrapments and just letting them fall onto the floor. As curious as ever, Chelsea follows Rick and catches him in the act. And of course, one of the cobras bites her leg. The screaming begins as the Thai locals rush her to a local hospital.
"Two brushes with death in two days." Chelsea has not had an easy trip, and she feels no sympathy for those slithery creatures that bit her. "Snakes are evil. Read the bible."
And dinner at The White Lotus is quite the social event. Chelsea and Rick sit with Chloe and Gary, who invite the couple onto his yacht for a day party. But if we learned anything from Tanya, perhaps they should be on guard.
And our messy besties Kate, Jaclyn, and Laurie get political in a table talk about religion, which eventually leads to questions about who they voted for. Jaclyn and Laurie are baffled at how Kate can interact comfortably with her Texan neighbors who voted for Trump until Kate's evasiveness leads them to ask, "Are you a Republican?"
Kate's squinty smile is lethal as she replies, "No! I'm an independent. But Dave is!" Kate refuses to share if she voted for Trump, but the damage has been done with Jaclyn and Laurie.
Belinda recognizes Gary as Greg and calls him by his name in front of everyone at dinner. He denies it, but it's doubtful Belinda will let it go that easily.
And while Saxon's excited to party on a boat, Victoria is still wary of everyone around her and refuses to just trust Gary's wealth as a safety blanket. She then gives us the quote of the season: "Just because people are rich doesn't mean they're not trashy."
