6 Qs to Hair Guru Benjamin Mohapi

Benjamin Mohapi

West Hollywood's celebrity hairstylist is coming to New York with two pop-up shops at Cutler salons.

Here, Mohapi answers our questions about summer upkeeping, and reveals which famous man has the best hair, ever.

Out: How can I figure out which hairstyle works for my face shape?

Benjamin Mohapi: For me it's the cut that makes you feel the most masculine. This may sound a bit weird, as there are lots of different types of men out there, but as a rule I think it should look strong, not too fussy, and bring out your jawbone.

How can I protect my hair from UV-rays or sea water?

The best thing on the market for UV protection is a good hat, and I love a good hat! As for sea water, just make sure you shower as soon as you get out of the ocean to remove the salt. If that's left unchecked, it could result in the hair becoming dry and brittle.

Does it make sense to wash your hair more often in the summer?

This all depends. On those summer days when all you want to do is stick your head in the freezer, I suggest washing your hair in cool water --which is honestly one of the best feelings in the world. But be aware that too much shampooing, whatever the time of year, can dry out the hair and scalp. If possible, to avoid over-washing, simply rinse your hair well in the morning and the evening.

From your experience, which male celebrity has the best hair?

Of all the people I've ever worked with, David Beckham is by far the most influential when it comes to hair and fashion. Some people just have that right balance of knowing when to take a risk and when to keep it classic. It also helps to keep your ear to the ground when it comes to trends, and move at just the right time to keep you ahead of the curve. This is something David has been able to do with great success.

What are the top trends in men's hairstyles right now?

It's still what I'd call the "barista haircut:" super short on the sides and back, and long on top. It's a cut that's been around for a good while now, but it's still the one we see the most of. As for what's coming, the mullet is on its way back. You may laugh, but give it a couple of years, and you might have one too!

Finally, which hairstyling product could you not live without?

Right now, it's the Sachajuan Hair Paste, which is available at Selects, our apothecary.
