For pits' sake, keep your underarms tidy --and fragrant
Sure, underarm shaving isn't the most glamorous topic, but it's an issue that many men feel concerned about when summer comes. The heat makes you perspire (and smell), so you'll notice that your hairy ampits might not feels as fresh as you'd like them to be. But don't sweat it: There are tricks that can help you stay cool with minimal effort. Here, Kristina Vanoosthuyze, a grooming expert at Gillette's scientific communications team for global shave care, shares six steps to keep your armpits situation under control.
1. Trim first
If you are new to underarm shaving, or haven't shaved under your arms for a while, trim the hair first using scissors or clippers to enable a smoother result.
2. Shave in the shower
The water softens the hairs, making them easier to cut. Clean the area completely before starting, and apply a shave gel, such as Kiehl's Smooth Glider Precision Shave Lotion (5 fl. oz, $16, Kiehls.com) to lubricate the skin.
3. Get in the right position
Make sure the skin is taut; stretch your arm above your head and place your hand gently resting against the back of your neck.
4. Go slow
The underarm area has concave curves and uneven terrain. In addition, the skin there is generally thinner and more delicate. So it's essential that you take your time and go gently to avoid nicks and cuts.
5. Go in different directions
As underarm hair grows in all different directions, shave up, down and side to side for the closest shave.
6. Use the right tool
Use a good quality razor that has been specifically designed for mens' bodies, such as the Gillette Body razor ($8.99, Gillette.com). Exerting as little pressure as possible, use light, even strokes. Rinse the razor after each stroke until you've got a smooth surface.
