Painting in silence: the queer digital artist amplifying Iran's hidden voices

I'm a queer digital painter from Iran navigating a uniquely challenging path in the art world.

My artistic voyage began with a passion for digital painting. This medium liberates me from the constraints of traditional art forms.

After graduating in architecture in 2017, I took the bold step of sharing my art online, driven by a need to connect with a broader audience in a country where open expression of queer identity is stifled.

My artistic exploration began with the Qajar era, a significant period in Iranian history when kings exhibited notable preferences for men. This era's historical and cultural nuances provide a unique lens to address contemporary LGBTQ+ issues.

At the core of my work is a deep empathy for the community, especially gay men in Iran.

I've witnessed the duality of their lives: conforming to societal norms in public while privately expressing their true selves.

My paintings delve into themes of secrecy and the absence of public affection; the inability to openly express love or form visible romantic relationships is central to my work.

I also address the challenges faced by transgender individuals in Iran. Despite significant societal and legal obstacles, transgender individuals continue to exhibit remarkable courage in expressing their gender identity.

Life for LGBTQ+ Iranians in rural areas is even more dire than in cities.

Social and cultural pressures are harsher, and many live in constant fear. Honor killings and severe violence against individuals in these regions reflect the grim reality of rural life.

These conditions underscore the urgent need for greater support and protection for LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly in rural areas with entrenched traditional values.

One of my most impactful works, "Woman, Life, Freedom," embodies the struggles of Iranian women fighting for their fundamental rights. This painting has become a symbol of resistance against oppression and has been embraced globally. It's more than a creative endeavor; it's a powerful statement supporting women's rights and personal freedoms. The global reach of "Woman, Life, Freedom" is a testament to the power of art. This painting resonates deeply with audiences and has been featured by Kim Kardashian, displayed at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, and used in various marches and magazines.

It underscores the potential of art to inspire and mobilize.

The conditions for exhibiting art in Iran are heavily restricted. Public exhibitions are nearly impossible due to stringent laws and censorship.

This lack of physical space to discuss and reflect on LGBTQ+ issues only exacerbates the silence surrounding these topics.

The digital space has become indispensable, providing a platform to share my work and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

My art is a testament to the transformative power of artistic expression, and I remain dedicated to using my platform to uplift marginalized voices. My art is a voice for the silenced and a call to action for a more inclusive and equitable world.
