A 61-Year-Old Woman Gave Birth to Her Gay Son's Daughter

Cecile Elidge wanted to help her gay son and his partner have a child.

The new normal keeps getting...newer. And more normal! Definitely more normal, super average and nothing weird! You see, a lovely young gay couple in Omaha, Nebraska have welcomed a baby girl (aw) thanks to a surrogate (aw) who is of their own mothers (Wait, take a breath, withhold judgement.)

In a Buzzfeed profile, 61-year-old Cecile Elidge explained that she wanted to help her son Matthew and his husband Elliot Dougherty have a baby so much that she jokingly (but sincerely) offered up her own womb -- the ultimate babysitting gig.

Elliot and Matthew had been eager to start a family, but were stonewalled by their state's restrictive attitudes. When Cecile offered to carry their child, it was an opportunity to become parents without the heavy price tag of a more traditional surrogate.

"I thought if I could do it, I would do it," Cecile told Buzzfeed. "It was kind of a no-brainer."

Elliot obsessed over whether or not he could see two positive pink stripes during a two-minute home pregnancy test. According to Matthew, Cecile "literally said 'Shut the fuck up'" and checked for herself. She'd gotten pregnant on her first try -- way to rub it in, Cecile! -- using an embryo from Elliot's sister Lea Yribe fertilized by Matthew's sperm. That would be, her son-in-law's sperm.

Even without the cost of a surrogate, the couple still spent nearly $40,000 on IVF. "I do think it's sad that IVF as a process is exclusive to those who can afford it," Matthew said. "And for queer couples, it's a particular challenge."

On March 25, Cecile gave birth to her own granddaughter, Uma Louise Dougherty-Eledge, a child who will grow up to be fully normal with no family issues whatsoever. (Just like the rest of us!)
