How to travel in style with your best friend

Photography by Elias Weiss Friedman, A.K.A. The Dogist

If you're like many jet setters, you wouldn't dream of making a late-summer getaway without your most loyal companion in tow. Certainly he should look just as smart as you do at a boulevard cafe, and be as comfortable as you are while splashing in the sea or hiking a mountain trail.

The Essentials

At home, in the air, or on the road, your furry pal will ride in comfort and look good all the while.

Expert Advice for Jet Set Pets

Flying
If your pet will be traveling in the cargo hold, it's best to book direct flights whenever possible, to reduce delays and time on the hot tarmac, says BringFido.com.

Identification
Be sure your pet is microchipped and has an ID tag (with your phone number), and keep a photo handy in the event you get separated, writes SmarterTravel.com.

No Tummy Troubles
The American Kennel Club says that to avoid carsickness, your dog should have an empty stomach when traveling, so no feeding for six hours prior. He'll need water though, enough to stay hydrated but not full.

Ewf_3736_siloYour Dog Should Be Drinking This
Pooch Punch
While clean water is ideal, your pooch can occasionally enjoy carrot juice, coconut water, or almost any blended-up veggies with a splash of fresh beef or chicken broth. But don't use canned broths, as they may contain onions, toxic to dogs.

You Should Be Drinking This
Salty Dog

For this gin-based version of the greyhound, shake two ounces of Martin Miller's gin, four ounces of grapefruit juice, and ice, and pour it all into a salt-rimmed Collins glass. Garnish with a wedge of lemon or lime. (For more Miller's gin drinks, click here.)

Shake Puppies
You read Shake; now you must have its sequel. Because puppies. Shake Puppies, $17.99, will be out in October.
